Front Crankshaft Seal

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the crankcase.
  4.  
  5. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    CAUTION
    Wait at least 90 seconds after the negative battery cable is disconnected to prevent possible deployment of the air bag.



    Negative battery cable
     



    Fan shroud
     
    Radiator and cooling fan
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Air conditioner tension pulley, if equipped
     
    Ignition coil, if equipped
     
    Crankshaft pulley and the timing belt front covers
     

  8.  
  9. Reinstall the crankshaft pulley bolt and use it to rotate the engine clockwise until the timing marks are aligned.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Timing belt and belt tension
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Crankshaft sensor blade
     
    Inner timing belt and inner crankshaft sprocket
     
    Crankshaft seal without scratching the crankshaft

To install:

  1. Place the seal guide over the crankshaft and coat it with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Slide the seal over the guide until it touches the front case assembly, then use the appropriate seal driver to install the seal. Remove the seal guide.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Inner crankshaft sprocket
     
    Inner timing belt and belt tension
     
    Crankshaft sensor blade
     

  6.  
  7. Install the flange and the timing belt sprocket on the crankshaft.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Timing belt. Adjust the belt tension
     
    Timing belt front covers and the crankshaft pulleys
     
    Ignition coil, if equipped
     
    Air conditioner belt tension pulley if equipped
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Radiator, cooling fan and fan shroud
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Refill the crankcase.
  12.  
  13. Refill the cooling system.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  16.  

3.0L & 3.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the crankcase.
  4.  
  5. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    CAUTION
    Wait at least 90 seconds after the negative battery cable is disconnected to prevent possible deployment of the air bag.



    Negative battery cable
     



    Cooling fan
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Alternator
     
    Engine undercover, if equipped
     
    Power steering oil pump assembly
     
    Air conditioner compressor and bracket, if equipped
     
    Timing indicator bracket
     
    Accessory mount assembly
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Timing belt covers and the timing belt
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     

  8.  
  9. Cut out a portion in the crankshaft oil seal lip and pry out the oil seal with a flat prying tool, being careful not to damage the crankshaft.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Coat the lip of the new seal with oil and install the seal using the proper seal driver.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Crankshaft sprocket and the timing belt
     
    Timing belt covers
     
    Crankshaft pulley. Torque the bolt to 134 ft. lbs. (181Nm).
     
    Accessory mount Assembly. Torque the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Timing indicator bracket. Torque the bolts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
     
    Air conditioner compressor and bracket, if equipped
     
    Power steering oil pump assembly
     
    Engine undercover, if equipped
     
    Alternator
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Cooling fan
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Refill the crankcase.
  6.  
  7. Refill the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for proper operation.
  10.  

3.0L 12v
  1. Remove the timing belt.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Crankshaft position sensor
     
    Crankshaft sensing blade
     
    Crankshaft spacer
     
    Key
     
    Oil seal
     

    1. Cut out a portion in the lip of the crankshaft oil seal.
    2.  
    3. Cover the tip of a screwdriver with a cloth and apply it to the cutout in the oil seal to pry off the oil seal.
      CAUTION
      Take care not to damage the crankshaft and oil pump case.

To install:

To install, reverse the removal procedure. Use a special tool to tap the oil seal into the oil pump case. Tap it until it is flush with the surface.

3.0L 24v
  1. Remove the timing belt.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Crankshaft position sensor
     
    Crankshaft sensing blade
     
    Crankshaft spacer
     
    Key
     
    Crankshaft front oil seal.
     

    1. Cut a portion in the crankshaft oil seal lip.
    2.  
    3. Cover the tip of a screwdriver with a cloth and apply it to the cutout in the oil seal to pry off the oil seal.
      CAUTION
      Take care not to damage the crankshaft and oil pump case.

To install:

  1. Reverse the removal procedure for installation.
  2.  
  3. Use the special tool to knock the oil seal into the oil pump case. Knock it as far as the surface.
  4.  

3.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the crankcase.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    CAUTION
    Wait at least 90 seconds after the negative battery cable is disconnected to prevent possible deployment of the air bag.



    Negative battery cable
     



    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
     
    Crankshaft sensing blade
     
    Crankshaft spacer and key
     
    Front oil seal

  8.  

To install:



Front oil seal. Apply oil to the seal, and install using Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer tool no. MD998717.
 
Crankshaft key and spacer.
 
Crankshaft sensing blade
 
CKP sensor
 


NOTE
To be sure the crankshaft pulley bolt does not loosen, make sure the clean the mating areas of the crankshaft, spacer, sensing blade and sprocket.
