Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower control arm and place in a vise.
  6.  
  7. Using a bushing removal tool remove the bushing from its mounting
  8.  

To install:

  1. Position the bushing with the larger end facing the front of the vehicle.
    NOTE
    Coat the bushing with a soap solution and take care not to twist.

  2.  
  3. Using the bushing installation tool, press the bushing into the bracket.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  

Front Bushing
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower control arm and place in a vise.
  6.  
  7. Using tool MB990883 remove the bushing
  8.  

To install:

  1. Position the bushing with the larger end facing the front of the vehicle.
  2.  


NOTE
Coat the bushing with a soap solution and take care not to twist.

  1. Using tool MB991522, press the bushing into the bracket.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower control arm and place in a vise.
  6.  
  7. Using tool MB990883 remove the bushing
  8.  

To install:

  1. Position the bushing with the larger end facing the front of the vehicle.
    NOTE
    Coat the bushing with a soap solution and take care not to twist.

  3. Using tool MB991522, press the bushing into the bracket.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel.
  8.  

Rear Bushing
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Using tool MB991522 press out the bushing
  8.  

To install:

  1. Position the bushing with the larger end facing the front of the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Using tool MB991522 press the bushing into the bracket.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel.
  8.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Skid plate and undercover
     
    Bumper stop
     
    Rear anchor assembly
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Lower ball joint from knuckle
     
    Stabilizer link assembly
     
    Shock absorber mounting bolts
     
    Lower arm shaft
     
    Anchor arm
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Torque the mounting bolts to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
     
    Anchor arm. Torque the bolt to 33 ft. Lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Lower arm shaft. Torque the bolt to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
     
    Shock absorber mounting bolts. Torque the bolt to 65-76 ft. lbs. (88-103 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer link assembly
     
    Lower ball joint from knuckle. Torque the nut to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Rear anchor assembly. Torque the nuts to 33ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Bumper stop. Torque the nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Skid plate and undercover

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Skid plate and undercover
     
    Bumper stop
     
    Rear anchor assembly
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Lower ball joint from knuckle
     
    Stabilizer link assembly
     
    Shock absorber mounting bolts
     
    Lower arm shaft
     
    Anchor arm
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Torque the mounting bolts to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
     
    Anchor arm. Torque the bolt to 33 ft. Lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Lower arm shaft. Torque the bolt to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
     
    Shock absorber mounting bolts. Torque the bolt to 65-76 ft. lbs. (88-103 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer link assembly
     
    Lower ball joint from knuckle. Torque the nut to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm).
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Rear anchor assembly. Torque the nuts to 33ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Bumper stop. Torque the nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Skid plate and undercover

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the under cover. Remove the skid plate.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the shock absorber and stabilizer link at the lower control arm assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front brake assembly.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the steering knuckle and tie rod end connection, using the proper tools.
  12.  
  13. Remove the dust cap, castle nut and washer. Remove the brake hose and vehicle speed sensor clamp bracket. Remove the wheel speed sensor.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the upper control arm ball joint connection, using the proper tools.
  16.  
  17. Remove the halfshaft.
    NOTE
    When pulling the halfshaft out of the differential carrier, be careful that the spline part of the halfshaft does not damage the oil seal.

  18.  
  19. Remove the lower ball joint cotter pin and retaining nut.
  20.  
  21. Using the proper tools disconnect the lower arm ball joint and knuckle assembly connection.
  22.  
  23. Using the proper tools, disconnect the tie rod end and knuckle assembly connection.
  24.  
  25. Remove the lower control arm ball joint retaining bolts. Remove the ball joint.
  26.  
  27. Remove the hub and knuckle assembly.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the shock absorber and lower arm assembly connection. Remove the bump stopper.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the lower arm assembly and stabilizer link connection.
  32.  
  33. Make an alignment mark on the bracket and eccentric cam bolt. Remove the lower control arm mounting bolts. Remove the lower control arm from the vehicle.
  34.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Torque all retaining bolts to specifications.
    NOTE
    Bolt torques are indicated in the accompanying illustration. To prevent the bushings from breakage, the parts indicated with an asterisk (*) should be temporarily tightened, and then fully tightened with the vehicle on the ground in the unladen condition.

  5. Check the front end alignment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.

  5. Remove the under cover. Remove the skid plate.
  6.  
  7. Remove the torsion bar. Remove the heat cover, right side. Remove the dust covers.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the lower arm ball joint connection. Disconnect the stabilizer bar connection. Remove the bump stopper.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower arm shaft and front anchor arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower control arm retaining bolts. Remove the lower control arm from the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower control arm ball joint assembly. Remove the stopper bolt.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Torque all retaining bolts to specifications.
    NOTE
    Bolt torques are indicated in the accompanying illustration. To prevent the bushings from breakage, the parts indicated with an asterisk (*) should be temporarily tightened, and then fully tightened with the vehicle on the ground in the unladen condition.

  5. Check the front end alignment.
