Strut (MacPherson Strut) Assembly

Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Strut
     

  4.  
  5. Compress the coil spring until there is a clearance on both ends
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Strut center nut
     
    Seat
     
    Collar
     
    Bushing
     
    Bracket
     
    Upper pad
     
    Cup
     
    Helper rubber
     
    Spring
     
    Lower pad
     

  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the center nut to 17 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Strut
     

  4.  
  5. Compress the coil spring until there is a clearance on both ends
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Strut center nut
     
    Seat
     
    Collar
     
    Bushing
     
    Bracket
     
    Upper pad
     
    Cup
     
    Helper rubber
     
    Spring
     
    Lower pad
     

  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the center nut to 17 ft. lbs. (22Nm).

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Shock absorber
     

  4.  
  5. Compress the coil spring until there is a clearance on both ends
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Self locking nut
     
    Seat
     
    Collar
     
    Bushing
     
    Bracket
     
    Upper pad
     
    Cup
     
    Helper rubber
     
    Spring
     
    Lower pad
     

  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the center nut to 17 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

Removal & Installation



  1. On vehicles equipped with a supplemental restraint system (SRS), turn the front wheel to the straight ahead position and remove the ignition key to prevent the steering wheel from turning.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Upper control arm
     
    Battery and battery tray
     
    A/C condenser
     
    Air cleaner
     
    Wheel
     
    Upper mounting nuts
     
    Lower mounting bolt/nut
     

  4.  
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the upper mounting nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm); the lower mount nut to 119 ft. lbs. (162 Nm).
  6.  

  1. On vehicles equipped with a supplemental restraint system (SRS), turn the front wheel to the straight ahead position and remove the ignition key to prevent the steering wheel from turning.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper control arm assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the battery and the battery tray. Remove the radiator condenser tank. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper shock absorber mounting cap. Remove the mounting nuts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower shock absorber mounting bolt and nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shock absorber from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the shock absorber. Temporarily tighten the lower nut and bolt, but do not torque to specification at this time.
    NOTE
    To prevent the bushings from breakage, the lower shock absorber nut and bolt should not be torqued to specification until the vehicle is on the ground in the unladen position.

  2.  
  3. Torque the lower nut and bolt to 108-130 ft. lbs. (148-176 Nm)
  4.  
  5. Torque the upper nuts to 28-36 ft. lbs. (39-49 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  8.  
  9. Test drive the vehicle and check the alignment.
  10.  
  11. Check and adjust all fluid levels, as required.
