Upper Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel assembly
     
    Bumper stop
     
    Anchor arm assembly adjustment nut
     
    Brake hose clip and connection
     
    Upper ball joint from knuckle
     
    Brake hose clip
     
    Rebound stopper(s)
     
    Speed sensor bracket
     
    Shim
     
    Upper control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm and shim. Torque the nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
     
    Speed sensor bracket
     
    Rebound stopper(s)
     
    Brake hose clip
     
    Upper ball joint from knuckle. Torque the nut to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
     
    New cotter pin
     
    Brake hose clip and connection
     
    Anchor arm assembly adjustment nut. Torque the nuts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Bumper stop
     
    Wheel assembly
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel assembly
     
    Bumper stop
     
    Anchor arm assembly adjustment nut
     
    Brake hose clip and connection
     
    Upper ball joint from knuckle
     
    Brake hose clip
     
    Rebound stopper(s)
     
    Speed sensor bracket
     
    Shim
     
    Upper control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm and shim. Torque the nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
     
    Speed sensor bracket
     
    Rebound stopper(s)
     
    Brake hose clip
     
    Upper ball joint from knuckle. Torque the nut to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
     
    New cotter pin
     
    Brake hose clip and connection
     
    Anchor arm assembly adjustment nut. Torque the nuts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Bumper stop
     
    Wheel assembly

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Properly support the lower control arm with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel speed sensor bracket mounting bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake hose clip. Remove the brake hose.
  10.  
  11. Using the proper tools, separate the upper arm ball joint and steering knuckle connection.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper arm assembly and front frame retaining bolts and nuts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. As required, and using the proper tools remove the ball joint from the upper control arm.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Check the front end alignment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the brake fluid.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Properly support the lower control arm with a jack.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shock absorber.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the anchor arm bolt of the torsion bar, all the way.
    NOTE
    Be sure that when the anchor arm adjusting nut is loosened to use a jack to support the lower arm.

  12.  
  13. Disconnect the brake line hose fitting. Remove the brake line hose clamp.
  14.  
  15. Using the proper tools, separate the upper arm ball joint and steering knuckle connection.
  16.  
  17. If equipped with ABS, remove the speed sensor retaining bracket. Remove the rebound stopper. Remove the shims.
  18.  
  19. Remove the upper control arm retaining bolts. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. As required, and using the proper tools remove the ball joint from the upper control arm.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper control arm so that the word -OUT- on the upper arm shaft is facing toward the outside of the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Bleed the brake system. Correct and adjust the brake fluid level, as required.
  6.  
  7. Check the front end alignment.
  8.
