Removal & Installation

  1. On vehicles equipped with a supplemental restraint system (SRS), turn the front wheel to the straight ahead position and remove the ignition key to prevent the steering wheel from turning.
  2.  
  3. Drain the power steering fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Tie rod ends
     
    Steering hoses
     
    Left side differential mount bracket
     
    Intermediate shaft-to-gear box bolt
     
    Gear mounting clamps and gear
     

  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Mounting clamp bolts: 51 ft. lbs. (69Nm)
     
    Tie rod end ball stud nuts: 29 ft. lbs. (39Nm)
     
    Intermediate shaft pinch bolt: 13 ft. lbs. (18Nm)

NOTE
The vehicle is equipped with a supplemental restraint system (SRS), turn the front wheel to the straight ahead position and remove the ignition key to prevent the steering wheel from turning. Failure to do so may damage the SRS clock spring and render the SRS system inoperative, risking serious injury.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    Wait at least 90 seconds after the negative battery cable is disconnected to prevent possible deployment of the air bag.

  3. Drain the power steering fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine under cover
     
    Tie rod ends
     
    Steering hoses
     
    Left side differential mount bracket
     
    Intermediate shaft-to-gear box bolt
     
    Gear mounting clamps and gear
     

  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Mounting clamp bolts: 51 ft. lbs. (69Nm)
     
    Tie rod end ball stud nuts: 29 ft. lbs. (39Nm)
     
    Intermediate shaft pinch bolt: 13 ft. lbs. (18Nm)
