Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the rear axle assembly with a hydraulic floor jack, so that the shock absorber may be removed.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper and lower mounting nuts and bolts that attach the shock to the frame and bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shock absorber from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the shock absorber

    Lower bolt: 159-181 ft. lbs. (216-245 Nm) on the Montero Sport and 113 ft. lbs. (152 Nm) on the Montero
     
    Upper mounting nut: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) on the Montero Sport and 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm) on the Montero
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the floor jack from under the axle assembly.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Support the rear axle assembly with a hydraulic floor jack, so that the shock absorber may be removed.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper and lower mounting nuts and bolts that attach the shock to the frame and bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shock absorber from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the shock absorber

    1998-00 lower bolt: 159-181 ft. lbs. (216-245 Nm) on the Montero and 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) on the Montero Sport
     
    2001-02 lower bolt: 159-181 ft. lbs. (216-245 Nm) on the Montero Sport and 113 ft. lbs. (152Nm) on the Montero
     
    1998-00 upper mounting nut: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) on the Montero and 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) on the Montero Sport
     
    2001-02 upper mounting nut: 16 ft. lbs. (22Nm) on the Montero Sport and 33 ft. lbs. (44Nm) on the Montero
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the floor jack from under the axle assembly.
  4.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Support the rear axle assembly with a hydraulic floor jack, so that the shock absorber may be removed.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper and lower mounting nuts and bolts that attach the shock to the frame and bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shock absorber from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Torque all retaining bolts to specifications.
    NOTE
    Bolt torques are indicated in the illustration. To prevent the bushings from breakage, the parts indicated with an asterisk (*) should be temporarily tightened, and then fully tightened with the vehicle on the ground in the unladen condition.

  5. On Montero, check the rear wheel alignment.
  6.
