Camshaft, Bearings & Lifters

Inspection



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft from the engine.
  4.  
  5. Check the camshaft bearing journals for damage and binding.
  6.  
  7. If the journals are binding, check the cylinder head for damage.
  8.  
  9. Check the cylinder head for clogged oil holes.
  10.  
  11. Check the camshaft surface for abnormal wear and damage. Replace the camshaft, as required.
  12.  
  13. Measure the cam height and replace the camshaft if not within specification.

  15. 2003 engine: Intake camshaft 1.472 inch, minimum limit 1.452 inch. Exhaust camshaft 1.450 inch, minimum limit 1.430 inch.

  17. 2004 engine: Point -A- intake cam (low speed cam) -A- 1.332 inch, minimum limit 1.313 inch. Point -B- intake cam (low speed cam) -B- 1.471 inch, minimum limit 1.451inch. Point -C- intake cam (high speed cam) -C- 1.465 inch, minimum limit 1.445 inch. Point -D- exhaust cam 1.491 inch, minimum limit 1.471 inch.

  19. 2005-2006 engines: Point -A and -B- intake cam (low speed cam) -A and -B- 1.475 inch, minimum limit 1.455 inch. Point -C- intake cam (high speed cam) -C- 1.465 inch, minimum limit 1.445 inch. Point -D- exhaust cam 1.465 inch, minimum limit 1.445 inch.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air cleaner
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Upper timing belt cover
     
    Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose
     
    Breather hose
     
    Control wiring harness connection
     
    Engine hanger
     
    Oil control valve
     
    Oil pressure switch
     
    Rocker arm (valve) cover and gasket
     
    Oil seals, if necessary
     
    Accumulator assembly
     
    Timing belt
     
    Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor support
     
    CMP sensing cylinder
     
    Camshaft sprocket
     
    Camshaft oil seal
     
    Exhaust rocker arm shaft caps
     
    Exhaust rocker arm and shaft assembly
     
    Intake rocker arm shaft caps
     
    Intake rocker arm and shaft assembly
     
    Camshaft. Inspect the bearing journals on the camshaft and the cylinder head.
     
    Water inlet fitting and thermostat case
     
    Cylinder head plug
     
    Valve lifters

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Valve lifters
     
    Cylinder head plug
     
    Water inlet fitting and thermostat case assembly
     

  2.  
  3. Lubricate the camshaft journals and camshaft with clean engine oil

    Camshaft. Make sure the dowel pin of the camshaft is in the proper position.
     

  4.  
  5. Install the intake rocker arm and shaft assembly as follows:
    1. Place the intake rocker shaft so that the 0.22 in. (5.5mm) hole faces the cylinder head.
    2.  
    3. Install the intake rocker arm shaft caps.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the intake rocker shaft mounting bolts to 21-25 ft. lbs. (28-34 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Rocker arm shafts, placing the end with the notched side toward the timing belt
    8.  
    9. Rocker arms. Move the rocker arms from side to side before tightening the shaft bolts to 21 ft. lbs.
    10.

  7. Install the exhaust rocker arm and shaft assembly as follows:

    Place the exhaust rocker shaft so that its notch is positioned as shown in the accompanying figure.
     
    Install the exhaust rocker arm shaft caps.
     
    Tighten the exhaust rocker shaft mounting bolts to 106-124 inch lbs. (12-14 Nm).

  9. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  11. Fill the crankcase with oil and connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air cleaner

    Exhaust rocker arm and shaft assembly
     
    Intake rocker arm shaft caps
     
    Intake rocker arm and shaft assembly
     
    Camshaft. Inspect the bearing journals on the camshaft and the cylinder head.
     
    Water inlet fitting and thermostat case
     
    Cylinder head plug
     
    Valve lifters

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Valve lifters
     
    Cylinder head plug
     
    Water inlet fitting and thermostat case assembly

  3. Lubricate the camshaft journals and camshaft with clean engine oil

    Camshaft. Make sure the dowel pin of the camshaft is in the proper position.

  5. Install the intake rocker arm and shaft assembly as follows:
    1. Place the intake rocker shaft so that the 0.22 in. (5.5mm) hole faces the cylinder head.
    2.  
    3. Install the intake rocker arm shaft caps.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the intake rocker shaft mounting bolts to 21-25 ft. lbs. (28-34 Nm).

      Rocker arm shafts, placing the end with the notched side toward the timing belt
       
      Rocker arms. Move the rocker arms from side to side before tightening the shaft bolts to 21

  7. Install the exhaust rocker arm and shaft assembly as follows:
    1. Place the exhaust rocker shaft so that its notch is positioned as shown in the illustration.
    2.  
    3. Install the exhaust rocker arm shaft caps.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the exhaust rocker shaft mounting bolts to 106-124 inch lbs. (12-14 Nm).
