Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle
     
    Driveplate bolts. Use special tool MD998781 to hold the driveplate while loosening the bolts.
     
    Driveplate adapter plate
     
    Driveplate
     
    Crankshaft bushing
     

  4.  
  5. Carefully pry the seal out of the oil seal case without damaging the sealing surface of the crankshaft.
  6.

To install:

  1. Apply engine oil to the lip of the new seal and install the seal in the case using the proper size seal driver.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Driveplate
     
    Driveplate adapter plate
     
    Driveplate bolts. Secure the driveplate with the special tool, as done during removal, then torque to 98 ft. lbs. (132 Nm).
     
    Transaxle
     

  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with automatic transaxle, remove the driveplate bolts. Use special tool MD998781 to hold the driveplate while loosening the bolts. Remove the driveplate adapter plate and driveplate.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with manual transaxle, remove the flywheel bolts. Remove the flywheel adapter plate, flywheel and flywheel adapter plate.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankshaft bushing. Carefully pry the seal out of the oil seal case without damaging the sealing surface of the crankshaft.

  10.  

To install:

  1. Apply engine oil to the lip of the new seal.
  2.  
  3. Install the seal in the case using the proper size seal driver.
  4.  
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with automatic transaxle, torque the driveplate retaining bolts to 98 ft. lbs. (132 Nm).
  8.  
  9. If equipped with manual transaxle, torque the flywheel retaining bolts to 98 ft. lbs. (132 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the transaxle assembly.
