Strut (MacPherson Strut) Assembly

Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Compress the coil spring using a spring compressor until the spring just comes away from one of the seats.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Center nut from the strut. Do NOT use an impact wrench to remove the center nut.
     
    Strut insulator assembly
     
    Bearing
     
    Upper spring seat and upper spring pad
     
    Rubber bumper
     
    Coil spring
     
    Lower spring pad
     
    Strut assembly

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly
     
    Lower spring pad
     
    Compressed spring on the strut assembly
     
    Rubber bumper
     
    Upper spring pad and spring seat
     
    Bearing
     
    Strut insulator
     
    Nut and tighten it to 38-52 ft. lbs. (50-70 Nm)
     
    Strut to the vehicle
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Compress the coil spring using a spring compressor until the spring just comes away from one of the seats.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Center nut from the strut. Do NOT use an impact wrench to remove the center nut.
     
    Strut insulator assembly
     
    Bearing
     
    Upper spring seat and upper spring pad
     
    Rubber bumper
     
    Coil spring
     
    Lower spring pad
     
    Strut assembly

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly
     
    Lower spring pad
     
    Compressed spring on the strut assembly
     
    Rubber bumper
     
    Upper spring pad and spring seat
     
    Bearing
     
    Strut insulator
     
    Nut and tighten it to 38-52 ft. lbs. (50-70 Nm)
     
    Strut to the vehicle
     

  2.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the windshield washer fluid tank.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support vehicle.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with ABS, disconnect the front speed sensor harness bracket from the strut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake hose bracket.
  12.  
  13. Support the lower arm using floor jack. Remove the lower strut to knuckle bolts.
  14.  


NOTE
Before removing the top bolts, make matchmarks on the body and the strut insulator for proper reassembly.

  1. Remove the strut upper mounting nuts, insulator clip and stiffener plate.
  2.  
  3. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
  4.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut to the vehicle
     
    Stiffener plate
     
    Insulator clip
     
    Top mounting nuts and tighten to 30-36 ft. lbs. (39-49 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Position the strut on the knuckle and install the mounting bolts. While holding the head of the lower mounting bolt, tighten the nuts to 116-130 ft. lbs. (158-175 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Brake hose bracket and the ABS harness brake, if equipped
     
    Wheel and tire assembly
     
    Windshield washer fluid reservoir
     

  6.  
  7. Perform a front end alignment.
  8.  


NOTE
If the vehicle is equipped with ABS, be careful when handling the pole piece at the tip of the speed sensor so as not to damage it by striking against other parts.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the windshield washer fluid tank.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support vehicle. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with ABS, disconnect the front speed sensor harness bracket from the strut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake hose bracket.
  12.  
  13. Support the lower arm using floor jack. Remove the lower strut to knuckle bolts.
    NOTE
    Before removing the top bolts, make matchmarks on the body and the strut insulator for proper reassembly.

  15. Remove the strut upper mounting nuts, insulator clip and stiffener plate.
  16.  
  17. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.

    Insulator clip
