Brake Shoes

Adjustment



  1. Pull the parking brake lever with a force of about 45 lbs. (200 N) and count the number of notches. The standard value is 4-5 notches.
  2.  
  3. If the parking brake lever stroke is not the standard value, adjust as outlined in the following steps.
  4.  
  5. Remove the floor console assembly.

  7. Loosen the adjusting nut to move it to the cable rod end so that the cable will be free.
  8.  
  9. Depress the brake pedal repeatedly until the lever has no change in its stroke.
    NOTE
    Depressing the brake pedal repeatedly adjusts shoe clearance correctly.

  11. Turn the adjusting nut to adjust the parking brake lever stroke to the standard value. After adjusting, check that there is no space between the adjusting nut and the parking brake lever. Check that the adjusting nut is secured with the nut holder.
    WARNING
    If the parking brake lever stroke is below the standard value and the braking is too firm, the rear brakes may drag.

  13. After adjusting the parking brake lever stroke, raise and safely support the rear end of the vehicle, and then release the parking brake and turn the rear wheels to check that the rear brakes are not dragging.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the parking brake cable adjusting nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheels
     
    Brake drum
     
    Parking brake cable connection. Use a 10mm wrench to help remove the cable from the backing plate.

    Shoe hold-down cup and spring
     
    Shoe-to-lever spring

    Shoe from the lever by inserting a prytool to open the retainer joint, then remove the retainer

To install

  1. Lubricate the backing plate bosses, anchor pin, and parking brake actuating mechanism with lithium-based grease.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Lever to the shoe and secure with the retainer
     
    Shoe and lever assembly
     
    Shoe and lining assembly
     
    Shoe-to-lever spring
     
    Shoe hold-down spring
     
    Shoe hold-down cup
     
    Retainer spring
     
    Auto adjuster assembly
     
    Adjuster lever
     
    Shoe-to-shoe spring
     
    Parking brake cable
     

  4.  
  5. Pre-adjust the shoes so the drum slides on with a light drag and install brake drum.

    Wheel bearing dust cap and adjust the rear brake shoes
     

  6.  
  7. Tighten the parking brake cable adjusting nut.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove some of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the parking brake cable adjusting nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheels
     
    Brake drum
     
    Parking brake cable connection. Use a 10mm wrench to help remove the cable from the backing plate.

To install

    Parking brake cable
     

  4.  
  5. Pre-adjust the shoes so the drum slides on with a light drag and install brake drum.

    Wheel bearing dust cap and adjust the rear brake shoes
     

  6.  
  7. Tighten the parking brake cable adjusting nut.
  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the brake fluid level, as required.
  10.
