On this engine, the reluctor gap can only be checked. Doing so is not a matter of routine maintenance, but usually is necessary only if the distributor is overhauled. However, too tight a fit between the signal rotor and the pickup stator could cause rotation of the distributor to damage the parts involved or produce an incorrect signal.
In some cases, severe wear or incorrect original manufacturing tolerances in the distributor bearings could cause wear of these two pieces that resembles damage due to too tight a fit.
- Remove the distributor cap.
- Remove the two bolts that secure the rotor in place.
- Rotate the engine using a wrench on the front pulley until the three vertical stator pieces on the distributor line up with three of the rotor lobes.
- Using a non-magnetic feeler gauge of 0.008 in. (0.2 mm) thickness, insert it straight down between the stator and rotor., As long as the gauge can be inserted and moved easily, the parts are okay; the gap may be slightly wider than the 0.008 in. (0.2 mm) specification.
- Install the cap and rotor.

While service is not required as a part of normal maintenance, if you have worked on the distributor or if you suspect the reluctor gap might be incorrect because of ignition problems, you can check and adjust it.
- Remove the distributor cap and rotor.
- Rotate the engine (you can use a large socket wrench on the bolt that attaches the front pulley-but only turn the engine clockwise) so that one of the prongs of the rotor is directly across from the igniter pickup.
- Insert a non-magnetic feeler gauge of 0.031 in. (0.8 mm) between the prong and pickup. If the gap is correct, there will be a very slight drag. If the gauge fits loosely or cannot be inserted, loosen both mounting screws and insert the gauge. Slowly adjust the gap by pivoting the igniter assembly on the left screw and rotating it at the right side, where it's slotted. When the gauge is just being touched by the prong and the pickup, tighten the right side screw first and then the screw on the left.
- Recheck the gap and readjust as necessary.
- Reinstall the cap and rotor.
