Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Mark the driveshaft and axle companion flanges for assembly alignment.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Skid plates, if equipped
     
    Rear driveshaft
     
    Front driveshaft, if equipped
     
    Input and output speed sensors
     
    Transfer case shift motor and mode sensor assembly
     
    Variable line pressure connector from the transmission, if equipped
     
    Transmission range sensor
     
    Wires from the solenoid/pressure switch assembly
     
    Bolts holding the exhaust crossover pipe to the pre-catalytic converter pipe flanges
     
    Bolts holding the exhaust crossover pipe to the catalytic converter flange.
     
    Starter motor
     
    Engine to transmission collar
     

  6.  
  7. Rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction until converter bolts are accessible. Remove the bolts one at a time.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission vent hose
     
    Transfer case, if equipped
     

  10.  
  11. Support the rear of engine with a suitable jack.
  12.  
  13. Raise the transmission slightly with a suitable jack to relieve the load on the crossmember and supports.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolts securing rear support and cushion to transmission and crossmember.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolts attaching the crossmember to the frame and remove the crossmember.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler lines
  20.  
  21. Remove all remaining converter housing bolts.
  22.  
  23. Carefully work the transmission assembly rearward off engine block dowels.
    NOTE
    Hold the torque converter in place during transmission removal.

  25. Lower the transmission assembly and remove from the vehicle.
  26.  

To install:


NOTE
If a replacement transmission is being installed, transfer any components necessary, such as the manual shift lever and shift cable bracket, from the original transmission onto the replacement transmission.

  1. Raise the transmission and align the torque converter with the drive plate and transmission converter housing with the engine block.
  2.  
  3. Move the transmission forward and align the converter housing with engine block dowels.
  4.  
  5. Carefully work the transmission forward and over engine block dowels until converter hub is seated in crankshaft.
    NOTE
    Verify that no wires, or the transmission vent hose, have become trapped between the engine block and the transmission.

  6.  
  7. Install two mounting bolts to attach the transmission to the engine.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Remaining torque converter housing to engine bolts. Tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm)
     
    Transfer case, if equipped
     
    Rear transmission crossmember. Tighten the crossmember to frame bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm)
     
    Rear support to transmission. Tighten the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
     

  10.  
  11. Lower the transmission assembly onto the crossmember and install bolts attaching transmission mount to crossmember. Tighten clevis bracket to crossmember bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm). Tighten the clevis bracket to rear support bolt to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm)
  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    Gearshift cable to support bracket and transmission manual lever.
     
    Input and output speed sensor and the transmission range sensor.
     
    Variable line pressure connector, if equipped
     
    Wires to the solenoid/pressure switch assembly
     
    Torque converter-to-driveplate bolts. Tighten to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
     
    Starter motor and cooler line bracket
     
    Cooler lines to the transmission
     
    Transmission fill tube
     
    Exhaust components
     
    Rear driveshaft
     
    Front driveshaft, if equipped
     
    Skidplates, if equipped
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  14.  
  15. Adjust gearshift cable if necessary.
  16.  
  17. Refill the transmission with fluid to the correct level.
  18.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the skid plates, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Mark the driveshaft and axle companion flanges for assembly alignment.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear driveshaft
     
    Front driveshaft, if equipped
     
    Engine to transmission collar
     
    Exhaust support bracket from the rear of the transmission
     
    Any necessary exhaust components required for clearance
     
    Starter motor
     

  10.  
  11. Rotate the crankshaft in clockwise direction until converter bolts are accessible. Then remove bolts one at a time.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Output speed sensor connector
     
    Input speed sensor connector
     
    Transmission solenoid/TRS assembly connector
     
    Line pressure sensor connector
     
    Gearshift cable from transmission manual valve lever
     
    Transmission fluid cooler lines
     
    Transmission vent hose from the transmission
     

  14.  
  15. Support rear of engine with safety stand or jack.
  16.  
  17. Raise the transmission slightly with service jack to relieve load on crossmember and supports.
  18.  
  19. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Bolts securing rear support and cushion to transmission and crossmember
     
    Bolts attaching crossmember to frame and remove crossmember
     
    Transfer case, if equipped
     
    All remaining converter housing bolts
     

  20.  
  21. Carefully work transmission and torque converter assembly rearward off engine block dowels.
  22.  
  23. Hold torque converter in place during transmission removal.
  24.  
  25. Lower transmission and remove the transmission assembly.
  26.  

To install:


NOTE

    CAUTION

  9. Install or connect the following:

    Remaining torque converter housing to engine bolts. Tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
     
    Transfer case, if equipped
     
    Rear transmission crossmember. Tighten crossmember to frame bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
     
    Rear support to transmission. Tighten the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
     

  10.  
  11. Lower transmission onto crossmember and install bolts attaching transmission mount to crossmember. Tighten clevis bracket to crossmember bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm). Tighten the clevis bracket to rear support bolt to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Be sure the transmission harnesses are properly routed.



    Gearshift cable to transmission
     
    Wires to solenoid and pressure switch assembly connector, input and output speed sensors, and line pressure sensor.
     



    Torque converter-to-driveplate bolts. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
     
    Starter motor and cooler line bracket
     
    Cooler lines to transmission
     
    Transmission fill tube
     
    Exhaust components
     
    Engine collar onto the transmission and the engine. Tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
     
    Rear driveshaft
     
    Front driveshaft, if equipped
     
    Skidplates, if equipped
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  14.  
  15. Adjust the gearshift cable as necessary.
  16.  
  17. Refill the transmission with fluid to the correct level.
  18.
