Removal & Installation



3.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  6.  
  7. Set the No. 1 cylinder to Top Dead Center (TDC). The camshaft sprocket alignment mark should be at the 12 o'clock position.
    NOTE
    Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.

  9. Loosen, but DO NOT remove the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt. Leave the bolt snug against the sprocket.
  10.  
  11. Position Special Tool 8379 timing chain wedge between the timing chain strands, tap the tool to securely wedge the timing chain against the tensioner arm and guide.
  12.  
  13. Remove the camshaft position sensor, right camshaft only.

  15. Hold the camshaft with Special Tool 8428 Camshaft Wrench, while removing the camshaft sprocket bolt and sprocket.

  17. Using Special Tool 8428 Camshaft Wrench, gently allow the camshaft to rotate 5° clockwise until the camshaft is in the neutral position (no valve load).
  18.  
  19. Starting at the outside working inward, loosen the camshaft bearing cap retaining bolts 1 / 2 turn at a time. Repeat until the load is off the bearing caps.
  20.  
  21. Remove the camshaft bearing caps and camshaft.
    NOTE
    When the camshaft is removed the rocker arms may slide downward. Mark the rocker arms before removing camshaft.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the camshaft journals with clean engine oil
  2.  
  3. Position the camshaft into the cylinder head.
  4.  
  5. Install the camshaft bearing caps and hand tighten.
    NOTE
    Caps should be installed so that the stamped arrows on the caps point toward the front of the engine.

  6.  
  7. Tighten the bearing cap bolts in 1 / 2 turn increments, in sequence, to 100 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Position the camshaft sprocket into the timing chain aligning the alignment mark between the two marked chain links (Two links marked during removal).
  10.  
  11. Using Tool 8428 Camshaft Wrench, rotate the camshaft until the camshaft sprocket dowel is aligned with the slot in the camshaft sprocket. Install the sprocket onto the camshaft.
    CAUTION
    Remove any excess oil from the camshaft sprocket bolt. Failure to do so can cause bolt over-torque.

  13. Remove excess oil from bolt, then install the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt and hand tighten.
  14.  
  15. Remove Special Tool 8379 timing chain wedge.
  16.  
  17. Using Special Tool 6958 spanner wrench with adapter pins 8346, torque the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt to 90 ft. lbs. (122 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft position sensor, right side only
     
    Cylinder head cover
     

  20.  
  21. Start the engine and check for leaks.

4.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Cylinder head covers
     
    Rocker arms
     
    Hydraulic lash adjusters
     

  4.  
  5. Set the engine at Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke for the No. 1 cylinder.
  6.  
  7. Install Timing Chain Wedge 8350 to retain the chain tensioners.

  9. Matchmark the timing chains to the camshaft sprockets.
  10.  
  11. Install Camshaft Holding Tool 6958 and Adapter Pins 8346 to the left camshaft sprocket.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Right camshaft timing sprocket and target wheel
     
    Left camshaft sprocket
     
    Camshaft bearing caps, by reversing the tightening sequence
     
    Camshafts

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Camshafts. Tighten the bearing cap bolts in 1 / 2 turn increments, in sequence, to 100 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
     
    Target wheel to the right camshaft
     
    Camshaft timing sprockets and chains, by aligning the matchmarks
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the tensioner wedges and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 90 ft. lbs. (122 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Hydraulic lash adjusters in their original locations
     
    Rocker arms in their original locations
     
    Cylinder head covers
     
    Negative battery cable
