Lower Ball Joints

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper and rotor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the outer tie rod retaining nut from the knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle using Special Tool C-3894-A.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper ball joint nut, then separate the upper ball joint from the knuckle using special tool 8677, or equivalent.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower ball joint nut, then separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle using special tool 8677.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering knuckle.
  16.  
  17. If equipped with 4WD, move the halfshaft to the side and support the halfshaft out of the way.
  18.  
  19. Remove the snapring from the ball joint flange.
    NOTE
    Extreme pressure lubrication must be used on the threaded portions of the tool. This will increase the longevity of the tool and insure proper operation during the removal and installation process.

  21. Press the ball joint (3) from the lower control arm (4) using special tools C-4212-F (Press) (1), 8445-3 (Driver) (2) and 9604 (Receiver) (5).

    Fig. Install the ball joint (3) into the control arm and press in using special tools C-4212-F (1), 8441-4 (2) and 9654-1 (4).

To install:


NOTE
Extreme pressure lubrication must be used on the threaded portions of the tool. This will increase the longevity of the tool and insure proper operation during the removal and installation process.

  1. Install the ball joint (3) into the control arm and press in using special tools C-4212-F (press) (1), 8441-4 (Receiver) (2) and 9654-1 (Driver) (4).
  2.  
  3. Install the snapring around the ball joint flange.
  4.  
  5. Remove the support for the halfshaft and install into position, 4WD models only.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Install the tie rod end into the steering knuckle, then install the retaining nut and tighten to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
  10.  
  11. Install and tighten the halfshaft nut (if equipped) to 185 ft. lbs. (251 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the brake caliper and rotor.
  14.  
  15. Install the front wheel.
  16.  
  17. Check the vehicle ride height.
  18.  
  19. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.
