Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Shift transmission into Neutral.
  4.  
  5. Drain the transmission fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Shift knob
     
    Shift lever boot
     
    Shift lever extension
     
    Lower shift lever boot assembly from the floorpan
     
    Shift tower from the transmission
     
    Skid plate, if equipped with 4WD
     

  8.  
  9. Matchmark the driveshaft companion flanges for installation reference.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Driveshafts
     
    Y-pipe from the exhaust manifolds.
     
    Backup light switch connector
     
    Clutch slave cylinder splash shield, if equipped.
     
    Clutch slave cylinder
     

  12.  
  13. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transfer case if equipped
     
    Starter
     
    Transmission dust shield
     
    Rear crossmember
     
    Bolts/nuts from the rear transmission mount
     
    Transmission harness wires from clips on transmission shift cover

  17. Lower the transmission slightly and remove transmission to engine bolts.
    CAUTION
    Do not remove structural dust cover from engine block.

  19. Slide transmission rearward until input shaft clears clutch disc.
  20.  
  21. Lower the transmission and remove from the vehicle.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Clean the transmission front housing mounting surface
  2.  
  3. Apply a light coat of high temperature bearing grease or equivalent to contact surfaces of following components

    Release fork
     
    Ball stud
     
    Release bearing slide surface
     
    Input shaft splines
     
    Release bearing bore
     
    Propeller shaft slip yoke

  5. Support the transmission with a suitable jack
  6.  
  7. Raise and align the transmission input shaft with clutch disc, then slide transmission into place
  8.  
  9. Verify the front housing is fully seated.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission to engine bolts without washers and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
     
    Transmission bolts with washers and tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm)
     
    Dust shield and tighten bolts to 40 inch lbs. (4.5 Nm)
     
    Rear crossmember and tighten nuts to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm)
     
    Transmission rear mount bolts and tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm)
     
    Transmission harnesses to clips on shift cover
     
    Slave cylinder
     
    Transfer case, if equipped
     
    Driveshafts with reference marks aligned
     
    Y-pipe to the exhaust manifolds
     
    Shift tower, tighten bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Lower shift boot
     
    Floor console
     
    Shift lever extension
     
    Upper shift boot
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  12.  
  13. Refill the transmission with fluid to the correct level.
  14.
