Axle Shaft, Bearing & Seal

Removal & Installation



Axle Bearings
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle shaft seal from the axle tube with a seal pick.
    NOTE
    The seal and bearing can be removed at the same time with the bearing removal tool.

  6.  
  7. Remove the axle shaft bearing with Bearing Removal Tool Set 6310 and Adapter Foot 6310-9, or equivalent.

To install:

  1. Wipe the axle tube bore clean. Remove any old sealer or burrs from the tube.
  2.  
  3. Install the axle shaft bearing with Installer C-4198 and Handle C-4171, or equivalent.
    NOTE
    Install the bearing with part number against the installer.

  5. Install a new axle seal.
  6.  
  7. Install the axle shaft
  8.  

Axle Shaft
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear brake components.
  4.  
  5. Remove the differential cover and drain the fluid.
  6.  
  7. Rotate the differential case to access the pinion mate shaft lock screw. Remove the lock screw and pinion mate shaft from the differential case.

  9. Push the axle shaft inward then remove the C-clip from the axle shaft.

  11. Remove the axle shaft.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the bearing bore and seal lip with gear lubricant. Insert the axle shaft through the seal, bearing and engage it into side gear splines.
    NOTE
    Use care to prevent the shaft splines from damaging the axle shaft seal.

  3. Insert the C-clip in end of axle shaft. Push the axle shaft outward to seat the C-clip in side gear.
  4.  
  5. Insert the pinion shaft into the differential case, through the thrust washers and differential pinions.
  6.  
  7. Align the hole in the pinion mate shaft with the hole in the differential case and install the lock screw with Loctite® on the threads. Tighten the lock screw to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the differential cover and tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Fill the differential with gear lubricant to the bottom of the fill plug hole.
  12.  
  13. Install the fill hole plug.
  14.  
  15. Install the rear brake components.
  16.  

Axle Shaft Seal
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle shaft seal from the end of the axle tube with a seal pick.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Wipe the axle tube bore clean. Remove any old sealer or burrs from the tube.
  2.  
  3. Coat the lip of the new seal with axle lubricant for protection prior to installing the axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the new axle seal with Installer C-4198 and Handle C-4171, or equivalent. When the tool contacts the axle tube, the seal is installed to the correct depth.
  6.  
  7. Install the axle shaft.
