Transfer Case Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transfer case fluid.
  4.  
  5. Shift the transfer case into 2WD.
  6.  
  7. Mark the front and rear propeller shafts for alignment reference.
  8.  
  9. Support the transmission with a suitable jack stand.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear crossmember and skid plate, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the front and rear driveshafts at the transfer case.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the transfer case shift motor and mode sensor wire connectors.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the transfer case vent hose.
  18.  
  19. Support the transfer case with a suitable transmission jack and secure the transfer case to the jack with chains.
  20.  
  21. Remove the nuts attaching transfer case to the transmission.
  22.  
  23. Pull the transfer case and jack rearward to disengage the transfer case.
  24.  
  25. Remove the transfer case assembly.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Align the transfer case and transmission shafts and install the transfer case onto the transmission.
  2.  
  3. Install and the transfer case attaching nuts. Tighten to 20-25 ft. lbs. (27-34 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the vent hose.
  6.  
  7. Connect the shift motor and mode sensor wiring connectors. Secure the wire harness to clips on the transfer case.
  8.  
  9. Align and connect the driveshafts.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear crossmember and skid plate, if equipped. Tighten the crossmember bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Refill the transfer case with fluid to the correct level.
  14.  
  15. Verify proper transfer case shift operation.
