Timing Chain Cover & Seal

Removal & Installation



3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the drive belt tensioner by accessing it through the wheelhouse opening.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pan. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Oil Pan, Removal & Installation.-
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft damper. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Crankshaft Damper, Removal & Installation.-
  16.  
  17. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe from the timing chain cover.
  18.  
  19. Remove the radiator output hose from the timing chain cover.
  20.  
  21. Remove the water pump. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Water Pump, Removal & Installation.-
  22.  
  23. Remove the power steering pump. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Power Steering Pump, Removal & Installation.-
  24.  
  25. Remove the timing chain cover bolts.
  26.  
  27. Remove the timing chain cover and gasket.
  28.  

To install:


NOTE
If you are replacing the timing chain cover, transfer the drive belt shield bolt and drive belt shield to the new cover.

  1. Apply sealer GM P/N 12346004, or equivalent, to both sides of the lower tabs of the engine front cover gasket. Apply the sealer no less than 5.0 mm (0.20 in) wide.
  2.  
  3. Install the timing chain cover.

  5. Install the timing chain cover bolts (1). Tighten the timing chain cover bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the timing chain cover bolts (2,3). Tighten the timing chain cover bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the power steering pump.
  10.  
  11. Install the water pump.
  12.  
  13. Install the radiator output hose to the timing chain cover.
  14.  
  15. Install the thermostat bypass pipe.
  16.  
  17. Install the crankshaft damper.
  18.  
  19. Install the oil pan.
  20.  
  21. Install the drive belt tensioner and accessory drive belt.
  22.  
  23. Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
  24.  
  25. Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.
  28.  
  29. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  30.  

3.9L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil
  8.  
  9. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the drive belt tensioner by accessing it through the wheelhouse opening.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pan. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Oil Pan, Removal & Installation.-
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft damper. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Crankshaft Damper, Removal & Installation.-
  16.  
  17. Remove the thermostat housing. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Thermostat, Removal & Installation.-
  18.  
  19. Remove the water pump. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Water Pump, Removal & Installation.-
  20.  
  21. Remove the timing chain cover bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the timing chain cover and gasket.

To install:

  1. Position the timing chain cover gasket to the engine block.
  2.  
  3. Install the timing chain cover.
  4.  
  5. Install the timing chain cover bolts. Apply sealant to the bolts that pass through the water jacket.
    CAUTION
    Failure to properly seal the bolts may result in coolant leaking from the bolt holes passing through the water jacket.

  6.  
  7. Tighten the timing chain cover bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the water pump.
  10.  
  11. Install the thermostat housing.
  12.  
  13. Install the crankshaft damper.
  14.  
  15. Install the oil pan.
  16.  
  17. Install the drive belt tensioner and accessory drive belt.
  18.  
  19. Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
  20.  
  21. Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  22.  
  23. Start the engine and check for leaks.
