Coil Springs

Removal & Installation



Independent Suspension
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies, making location reference marks on wheel to hub and on each retainer for reinstallation reference.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake calipers. See Disc Brakes.
  6.  
  7. Remove the parking brake cable mounting bracket. See Parking Brake.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake caliper mounting bracket. See Disc Brakes.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the ABS electrical connector from the wheel speed sensor.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ABS electrical connector mounting bracket.
  14.  
  15. Use the utility jack in order to support the lower control arm.
  16.  
  17. Remove the stabilizer link from the lower control arm.
  18.  
  19. Use the J 41820 in order to disconnect the ball joint from the knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Use the utility jack in order to lower the lower control arm and relieve the coil spring tension.
  22.  
  23. Remove the coil spring.

To install:

  1. Install the coil spring. 
  2.  
  3. Use the utility jack in order to raise the lower control arm and load the suspension.
  4.  
  5. Use the J 41820 in order to connect the ball joint to the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Install the stabilizer link to the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Use the utility jack in order to support the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Install the ABS electrical connector mounting bracket.
  12.  
  13. Connect the ABS electrical connector.
  14.  
  15. Install the brake caliper mounting bracket. See Disc Brakes.
  16.  
  17. Install the parking brake cable mounting bracket.
  18.  
  19. Install the brake calipers. See Disc Brakes.
  20.  
  21. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm) in a criss-cross pattern, after aligning the wheel hub with the reference mark and holes as shown in appropriate illustration.

  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  

With All Wheel Drive
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies, making location reference marks on wheel to hub and on each retainer for reinstallation reference.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper and support the brake caliper. Do not disconnect the brake hose. See Disc Brakes.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the tie rod from the knuckle. See Tie Rods.
  8.  
  9. Use a utility stand in order to support the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the height sensor link from the lower control arm, as shown.

  13. Disconnect the shock absorber from the lower control arm. See Shocks/Struts.

  15. Use the J 41820 in order to disconnect the ball joint from the knuckle. See Ball Joints.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower ball joint nut.
  18.  
  19. Use the utility stand in order to lower the control arm and relieve the coil spring tension.
  20.  
  21. Carefully remove the coil spring and jounce bumper.
  22.  
  23. Remove the spring insulator (2).
  24.  
  25. Remove the lower control arm.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Install the spring jounce bumper to the spring.
  2.  
  3. Index and install the spring insulator to the spring (2).
  4.  
  5. Index and install the spring insulator with the spring and the jounce bumper to the lower control arm (1).
  6.  
  7. Use the utility stand in order to raise the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Install the lower ball joint to the knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Install the lower ball joint nut. Tighten the ball joint nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm), plus 130 degrees.
  12.  
  13. Connect the shock absorber to the lower control arm. See Shocks/Struts.
  14.  
  15. Connect the height sensor link to the lower control arm.
  16.  
  17. Connect the tie rod to the knuckle. See Tie Rods.
  18.  
  19. Install the brake caliper. See Disc Brakes.
  20.  
  21. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm) in a criss-cross pattern, after aligning the wheel hub with the reference mark and holes as shown in appropriate illustration.

  23. Lower the vehicle.
