  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2.
  3. Relieve the coolant pressure.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
  6.
  7. Use a deep well socket and an extension in order to remove the sensor.

NOTE
Replacement components must be the correct part number for the application. Components requiring the use of the thread locking compound, lubricants, corrosion inhibitors, or sealants are identified in the service procedure. Some replacement components may come with these coatings already applied. Do not use these coatings on components unless specified. These coatings can affect the final torque, which may affect the operation of the component. Use the correct torque specification when installing components in order to avoid damage.

NOTE
Use care when handling the coolant sensor. Damage to the coolant sensor will affect the operation of the fuel control system.

  1. Coat the threads with sealer P/N 9985253 or equivalent.
  2.
  3. Install the sensor in the engine and tighten the sensor to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  4.
  5. Connect the ECT sensor electrical connector.
  6.
  7. Start the engine.
  8.
  9. Inspect for leaks.
  10.
  11. Inspect the coolant level.
  12.

CAUTION
Use care when handling the coolant sensor. Damage to the coolant sensor will affect the operation of the fuel control system

3.5L Engine

  1. Engine coolant must be drained below the level of the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
  2.
  3. Remove the air intake duct.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the ECT sensor harness connector.
  6.
  7. Remove the ECT sensor.

To install:

  1. Tap out the sensor mounting hole to remove any thread sealant residue. If the old sensor is to be reused, clean the threads of all sealant residue.
  2.
  3. Apply thread sealant to sensor threads.
  4.
  5. Install the ECT sensor and tighten to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  6.
  7. Connect the ECT sensor harness connector. Push in the connector until a click is heard, then pull back to confirm a positive engagement.
  8.
  9. Fill engine coolant to proper level.
  10.
  11. Install the air intake duct.
  12.
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.

  6.
  7. Disconnect the ECT sensor harness connector.
  8.
  9. Remove the ECT sensor.
  10.

To install:

  1. Apply thread sealant to sensor threads.
  2.
  3. Install the ECT sensor and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  4.
  5. Connect the ECT sensor electrical connector.
  6.
  7. Install the exhaust crossover pipe.
  8.
  9. Install the intake manifold cover.
  10.
  11. Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
