Bearing Replacement



  1. Select the expander assembly and driving washer.
  2.  
  3. Assemble the special tool J 33049.

  5. Drive out the camshaft bearings with special tool J 33049.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Assemble special tool J 33049according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  2.  
  3. Notice: Severe engine damage may result if the oil holes are not correctly aligned.
  4.  
  5. Install the camshaft bearings in the following order:

    Index the camshaft bearing oil holes with the engine block oil passages.
     
    Place the bearing on special tool J 33049.
     
    Install the third camshaft bearing.
     
    Install the second camshaft bearing.
     
    Install the outer camshaft bearings.
     

  6.  
  7. Apply sealer GM P/N 12377901 (Canadian P/N 10953504) or the equivalent to the camshaft rear bearing hole plug.
  8.  
  9. Install the camshaft rear bearing hole plug.
  10.  

  1. Select the expander assembly and driving washer.
  2.  
  3. Assemble the Camshaft Bearing Remover set J-33049
  4.  
  5. Drive out the camshaft bearings.
  6.  
  7. Install the camshaft bearings in the following order:
    1. Index the camshaft bearing oil holes with the engine block oil passages.
    2.  
    3. Place the bearing on the J-33049.
    4.  
    5. Install the third camshaft bearing.
    6.  
    7. Install the second camshaft bearing.
    8.  
    9. Install the outer camshaft bearings.
    10.

Inspection



  1. Clean the camshaft with cleaning solvent.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the camshaft for scored bearing journals, damaged lobes or damaged position sensor reluctor areas.
  4.  
  5. Measure the camshaft journals using a micrometer. If the camshaft journals are not within: 1.868-1.869 in (47.443-47.468mm) for the 3.5L engine or 2.024-2.025 in (51.415-51.440mm), replace the camshaft.
  6.  
  7. Measure the camshaft runout. If runout exceeds 0.001 in (0.025mm), replace the camshaft.
  8.  
  9. Measure the camshaft lobe lift using a dial indicator. Lubricate the camshaft and set the camshaft on V-blocks. If lobe lift exceeds 0.2727 in (6.9263mm), replace the camshaft.
  10.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    When removing valvetrain components they must be marked for installation in their original location. When the camshaft is being replaced, the valve lifters must also be replaced.


    WARNING
    Avoid damaging the camshaft bearing surfaces.



    Engine assembly
     



    Rocker arm covers
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Rocker arm bolts, balls, rocker arms and pushrods
     
    Lifter guide bolts and the guide
     
    Valve lifter(s) from the bores
     
    Crankshaft balancer and front cover
     
    Timing chain and sprockets
     
    Oil pump driven gear bolt and gear
     
    Camshaft thrust plate
     
    Camshaft
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Coat the camshaft with prelube.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft
     
    Camshaft thrust plate. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Oil pump driven gear. Tighten the bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
     
    Timing chain and sprocket
     
    Camshaft thrust button and front cover
     
    Crankshaft balancer
     

  4.  
  5. Lubricate the bearing surfaces with Molykote®.
    NOTE
    Installation of a new camshaft or a wear pattern on the old valve lifter will require the replacement of the camshaft and lifters together. If camshaft replacement is not necessary, be sure to install the used valve lifters in their original position.

  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Lifters in their original locations
     
    Lifter guide. Tighten the guide bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Pushrods, rocker arms, balls and bolts. Tighten the nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) plus an additional 30 degree turn.
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Rocker arm covers
     
    Engine assembly
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Adjust the valves, as required. Start the engine and verify no oil leaks.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine cooling system and the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Intake Manifold, Removal & Installation.-
  10.  
  11. Remove the rocker arms and pushrods. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Rocker Arms, Removal & Installation.-
  12.  
  13. Remove the timing chain cover. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Timing Chain Cover and Seal, Removal & Installation.-
  14.  
  15. Remove the timing chain. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Timing Chain, Removal & Installation.-
  16.  
  17. Remove the camshaft position sensor.

  19. Remove the camshaft thrust plate.

  21. Install the camshaft sprocket bolt into the camshaft. Tighten the bolt finger tight.
  22.  
  23. Carefully rotate and remove the camshaft from the engine block.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Coat the camshaft journals with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Coat the camshaft lobes with pre-lube.
  4.  
  5. With the sprocket bolt still installed finger tight, carefully rotate the camshaft while installing the camshaft into the camshaft bearings.

  7. Install the camshaft thrust plate and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the camshaft position sensor and tighten the bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
  12.  
  13. Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
  14.  
  15. Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  18.
