Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right engine splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Install the jack stands to the frame.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the left frame bolts and remove the right side frame bolts.
  14.  
  15. Using the jack stands, lower the right side of the frame to access the crankshaft balancer.
  16.  
  17. Remove the torque converter covers.
  18.  
  19. Install the Flywheel Lock J-37096 to the flywheel to prevent flywheel rotation.
  20.  
  21. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt and the washer.
  22.  
  23. Remove the crankshaft balancer using a 3 jaw puller.

To install:

Fig. Use Special Too J-29113 to install the crankshaft damper onto the crankshaft.

  1. Apply sealant to the keyway of the crankshaft damper. Place the crankshaft damper into position over the key on the crankshaft.
  2.  
  3. Install Special Tool J-29113 onto the crankshaft. Rotate the hex nut on the Installer Tool to install the crankshaft damper onto the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the installer tool.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with a 3.5L engine, tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  8.  
  9. If equipped with a 3.9L engine, tighten the crankshaft bolt using the following procedure:
    1. Install the old crankshaft balancer bolt and tighten to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Remove the old crankshaft bolt.
    4.  
    5. Install a NEW crankshaft balancer bolt. Tighten the bolt to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Tighten the new crankshaft bolt an additional 130 degrees.

  11. Remove the lock from the flywheel.
  12.  
  13. Install the torque converter covers.
  14.  
  15. Raise the frame to the original position.
  16.  
  17. Install and tighten the frame bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus an additional 90 degrees.
  18.  
  19. Install the right engine splash shield.
  20.  
  21. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Install the drive belt.
