Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower control arm and secure it in a vise and mark the control arm along the flat edge of the bushing flange.
  4.  
  5. Assemble the bushing removal tool.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the assembly until the bushing is removed.

To install:

  1. Install the bushing into the control arm by align the flat edge of the bushing to the mark in the control arm.
  2.  
  3. Make certain that the flat edge of the bushing is 30 degrees from the centerline of the control arm and the thin slot in the bushing is facing outboard.
  4.  
  5. Fully seat the bushing in the control arm.
  6.  
  7. Install the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Road test the vehicle and adjust the alignment, if necessary.
  10.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) wheel speed sensor connector and jumper harness
     
    Stabilizer shaft link
     
    Cotter pin from the ball joint stud and loosen the nut
     
    Ball Joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Align the ball stud cotter pin hole parallel to the knuckle to ease the pin installation.



    Lower control arm
     
    Ball joint stud to the knuckle
     



    Ball joint stud castle nut. Torque it to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
     
    New cotter pin
     
    Stabilizer shaft link. Torque the nut to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
     
    ABS jumper harness to the retainer clips
     
    ABS sensor connector
     
    Lower control arm nuts. Torque them to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Road test the vehicle and check the front end alignment, adjust if necessary.
  4.  


WARNING
Use only the recommended tools for separating the ball joint from the knuckle. Do NOT hammer or pry the ball joint from the knuckle. Failure to use the recommended tools may cause damage to the ball joint and seal.


NOTE
Use the ignition key in order to unlock the steering column.

  1. Turn the steering wheel in order to move the front of the applicable wheel to the outboard most position in order to allow for tool access to the lower control arm ball stud nut.
    NOTE
    Use only a frame-contact type vehicle lift or a floor jack at the recommended lift points. Do NOT use a suspension-contact type vehicle lift. Do NOT lift the front of the vehicle by the lower control arms.

  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor wiring harness from the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer shaft link.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cotter pin from the ball stud.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the ball stud nut. Do not remove the ball stud nut.
  14.  
  15. Install tool J 41820 over the ball stud nut and the steering knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Rotate the ball stud nut counterclockwise in order to separate the ball stud from the steering knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower control arm bolts and nuts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower control arm.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install the lower control arm.
  2.  
  3. Install the control arm bolts and nuts. Hand tighten only.
    NOTE
    Align the ball stud cotter pin hole parallel to the knuckle in order to ease the cotter pin installation.

  4.  
  5. Install the ball stud to the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Install the ball stud castle nut.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the ball stud castle nut to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) plus 135 degrees.
    NOTE
    Do not loosen the ball stud nut in order to align the ball stud nut slots to the ball stud cotter pin hole. If necessary, tighten the ball stud castle nut in order to align the ball stud castle nut slot to the ball stud cotter pin hole.


    NOTE
    Ensure that the cotter pin ends do not contact the ABS sensor connector or the drive axle.

  10.  
  11. Install a new cotter pin and bend the ends as shown in either example.
  12.  
  13. Install the stabilizer shaft link.
  14.  
  15. Install the wheel speed sensor harness to the lower control arm.
    NOTE
    This is a prevailing torque type fastener. This fastener may be reused only if: The fastener and its counterpart are clean and free from rust. The fastener develops 3 Nm (27 inch lbs.) of torque (drag) against its counterpart prior to the fastener seating. If the fastener does not meet these criteria, replace the fastener.

  16.  
  17. Install the lower control arm nuts.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the lower control arm nuts to 98 Nm (72 ft. lbs.).
  20.  
  21. Install the tire and wheel.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel, marking the location of the wheel to the hub prior to removal. Mark the individual location of all retainers as they are removed.
  6.  
  7. Detach the ABS wheel speed sensor connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ABS wheel speed sensor jumper harness from the harness retainer clips.
  10.  
  11. Remove the stabilizer shaft link.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cotter pin from the ball stud and loosen the ball stud nut.

  15. Install Special Tool J-41820 ball joint separator tool over the ball stud and lower control arm as shown.
  16.  
  17. Rotate the ball stud nut counterclockwise in order to separate the ball stud from the steering knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower control arm bolts and nuts, and then the lower control arm.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Do NOT loosen the ball stud nut in order to align the ball stud nut slots to the ball stud cotter pin hole. If necessary, tighten the ball stud castle nut in order to align the ball stud castle nut slot to the ball stud cotter pin hole. Ensure that the cotter pin ends do NOT contact the ABS wheel speed sensor, the ABS sensor connector or the drive axle.


    NOTE
    This is a prevailing torque type fastener. This fastener may be reused ONLY if: The fastener and its counterpart are clean and free from rust. The fastener develops 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm) of torque/drag against its counterpart prior to the fastener seating. If the fastener does not meet these criteria, REPLACE the fastener.



    Lower control arm
     
    Control arm bolts and nuts
     
    Ball stud to the knuckle
     
    Ball stud castle nut, tighten the ball stud castle nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm), plus 135 degrees
     



    NEW cotter pin and bend the ends
     
    Stabilizer shaft link
     
    ABS wheel speed sensor jumper harness to the harness retainer clips
     
    ABS wheel speed sensor connector
     



    Lower control arm nuts, tighten the lower control arm nuts to 71 ft. lbs. (96 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm) in a criss-cross pattern, after aligning the wheel hub with the reference mark and holes as shown in appropriate illustration.
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle
  6.
