Relieving Fuel System Pressure

Print

The fuel systems operate under high fuel pressures. It is very important that the pressure be properly relieved prior to servicing the system or any of its components.

3.5L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Loosen the fuel filler cap in order to relieve the tank pressure. Do not tighten at this time.
  4.
  5. Raise the vehicle.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector.
  8.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.
  11. Start and run the engine until the fuel supply remaining in the fuel pipes is consumed. Engage the starter for 3.0 seconds in order to assure relief of any remaining pressure.
  12.
  13. Raise the vehicle.
  14.
  15. Connect the fuel pump electrical connector.
  16.
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.
  19. Disconnect the negative battery cable in order to avoid possible fuel discharge if an accidental attempt is made to start the engine.
  20.
  21. When fuel service is finished, tighten the fuel filler cap and connect the negative battery cable.
  22.

3.9L Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Install Special Tool J-34730-1A Fuel Pressure Gauge to the fuel line as follows:
    1. Remove the intake manifold cover.
    2.
    3. Remove the fuel rail pressure fitting cap.
    4.
    5. Connect the fuel pressure gauge to the fuel pressure valve. Wrap a shop towel around the fitting to avoid an fuel spillage.

  4.
  5. Loosen the fuel fill cap in order to relieve the fuel tank vapor pressure.
  6.
  7. Install the drain hose of the fuel pressure into an approved container and open the valve to relieve the fuel system pressure.
  8.
  9. Drain any remaining fuel in the gauge into the approved container.
  10.
  11. Once the fuel pressure has been relieved, remove the fuel pressure gauge.
  12.
  13. When fuel service is finished, tighten the fuel filler cap and connect the negative battery cable.
