Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Left front wheel
     
    Stabilizer shaft
     
    Tie rod ends from the steering knuckle
     
    Intermediate shaft from the steering gear
     
    Frame rear bolts and discard them. Properly support the frame using engine support stand J39580.
     
    Power steering gear heat shield
     
    Cooler pipe from the power steering gear
     
    Pressure hose from the power steering gear
     
    Power steering gear through the left wheel opening
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering gear through the left wheel opening
     
    New power steering gear bolts. Torque them to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    Pressure hose and cooler pipe to the power steering gear. Torque the fasteners to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Heat shield. Torque the bolts to 54 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
     
    Utility stand to support the frame
     
    New rear frame bolts. Torque them to 122 ft. lbs. (165 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the utility stand.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Intermediate shaft to the steering gear. Torque the bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
     
    Tie rod ends to the steering knuckle
     
    Stabilizer shaft. Torque the bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
     
    Left front wheel
     

  6.  
  7. Fill and bleed the power steering system and check for leaks.
  8.  
  9. Road test the vehicle and adjust the toe as necessary.
