Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear tire and wheel assembly

    Rear halfshaft

Differential output shaft oil seal. Do not damage the differential sealing surfaces.

  4.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
Inspect the sealing surface of the wheel drive shaft inner tri-pot housing to ensure it is free of corrosion. Use a crocus cloth in order to remove any light corrosion and clean the sealing surface with denatured alcohol, or equivalent.

  4.
  5. Inspect the differential lubricant level.
  6.

  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    NOTE
When removing the wheel, mark the location of the wheel to the hub prior to removal. Mark the individual location of all retainers as they are removed.

    NOTE
The halfshaft nut must not be reused. Replace the halfshaft nut with new nut whenever it is removed.

  6.
  7. Remove the halfshaft nut and discard it.
  8.
  9. Release the parking brake.
  10.
  11. Remove and support the brake caliper bracket as follows:
    1. Remove the brake caliper from the mounting bracket and support the brake caliper (2) with heavy mechanics wire (1), or equivalent.
      CAUTION
Do NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper.

    2.
    3. Remove the brake pads from the brake caliper bracket (3).
    4.
    5. Remove the brake pad retainers from the brake caliper bracket (3).

  17. Loosen, but do not remove, the bolts securing the park brake cable bracket to the suspension knuckle.
  18.
  19. Detach the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  20.
  21. Install the puller, J-42129, onto the wheel hub and secure with wheel nuts.
  22.
  23. Begin to disengage the halfshaft from the wheel hub and bearing.

  24.
  25. Reposition the suspension knuckle toward the rear of the vehicle.
  26.
  27. Remove the special puller from the wheel hub.
  28.
  29. Remove the halfshaft from the rear axle differential and remove the halfshaft from the vehicle, using special removal tool assembly (J 33008-A, J 29794, and J 2619-O1).
    WARNING
The differential output shaft oil seal must be replaced when removing the rear halfshaft.

  30.
  31. Remove the rear halfshaft oil seal.
  32.

To install:

  1. Position the halfshaft to the differential output shaft.
    WARNING
Do not damage the differential output shaft oil seal.

  2.
  3. Carefully align and guide the halfshaft onto the differential output shaft.
  4.
  5. Install the halfshaft fully onto the differential output shaft using light force.
  6.
  7. Verify that the halfshaft is fully seated on the differential output shaft retaining ring by grasping the inner tripot housing and pulling outward. Do not pull on the halfshaft bar. The halfshaft will remain firmly in place when properly engaged.
  8.
  9. Align and carefully guide the halfshaft into the hub and bearing but do not seat fully.
  10.
  11. Position the suspension knuckle to the upper control arm.
  12.
  13. Install or connect the following:

Bolt and nut to the upper control arm/suspension knuckle assembly and tighten the bolt to 63 ft. lbs. (85Nm)

Secure the park brake cable bracket.

Rear tie rod to the rear suspension knuckle

Tie rod to knuckle bolt and tighten the bolt to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm)

    Brake caliper bracket

    Wheel speed sensor electrical connector

Park brake cable routing bracket, if removed

Park brake cable routing bracket nut, if removed. Tighten the nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)

    Set the park brake

    NEW halfshaft spindle nut

  14.
  15. Slowly tighten the nut in order to draw the halfshaft spindle into the wheel hub and bearing and tighten the halfshaft spindle nut to 192 ft. lbs. (260 Nm).
  16.
  17. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  18.
  19. Lower the vehicle.
