Removal & Installation



Lower Control Arm
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Rear the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the disc brake caliper and support the brake caliper. Do not disconnect the brake hose. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Brake Caliper, Removal & Installation.-
  6.  
  7. Use a suitable jack to support the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the height sensor link from the lower control arm, if equipped.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the speed sensor harness from the lower control arm.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the speed sensor connector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the speed sensor connecting mounting bracket.
  16.  
  17. Remove the stabilizer link from the lower control arm.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the lower shock absorber from the lower control arm.
  20.  
  21. Use Special Tool J-41820 Ball Joint Separator to disconnect the ball joint from the knuckle and remove the lower ball joint nut.
  22.  
  23. Using the jack, slowly lower the control arm to relieve the tension on the coil spring and remove the jack.
  24.  
  25. Remove the coil spring.
  26.  
  27. Matchmark the lower control arm at the cam indicator.

  29. Remove the lower control arm-to-crossmember mounting bolts to remove the lower control arm.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Install the lower control arm to the crossmember. Tighten the mounting bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the cam bolt and washer to the lower control arm. Align the cam indicator with the mark previously made on the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Install the cam nut and tighten to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the rear coil spring assembly to the control. Using a suitable jack, slowly raise the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Install the lower ball joint to the wheel knuckle and tighten the nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) plus an additional 130°.
  10.  
  11. Install the stabilizer link to the lower control arm.
  12.  
  13. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.
  14.  

Upper Control Arm
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies, making location reference marks on wheel to hub and on each retainer for reinstallation reference.
  6.  
  7. Remove the disc brake caliper and support the brake caliper. Do not disconnect the brake hose. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Brake Caliper, Removal & Installation.-
  8.  
  9. Detach the park brake cable from the park brake actuator and the park brake cable bracket. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Parking Brake Cables.-
  10.  
  11. Use a suitable jack stand in order to support the lower control arm.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the height sensor link from the lower control arm, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Remove the shock absorber from the lower control arm. For additional information, refer to the following section, -Shock Absorber, Removal & Installation.-
  16.  
  17. Remove the upper control arm to knuckle nut and bolt.

  19. Use two jack stands in order to support the crossmember.
  20.  
  21. Remove the crossmember to underbody bolts.
  22.  
  23. Slowly lower the crossmember until there is enough clearance to remove the upper control arm.
  24.  
  25. Remove the upper control arm to crossmember bolts and nuts.

  27. Remove the upper control arm.

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the bolts and the nuts which secure the upper control arm to the crossmember. Tighten the nuts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Use 2 utility stands in order to raise the crossmember. Install and tighten the crossmember to underbody bolts to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm to the knuckle, tighten the nut which secures the upper control arm to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm)
     
    Shock absorber to the lower control arm
     
    Height sensor link to the lower control arm as necessary
     
    Park brake cable to the park brake actuator and the park brake cable bracket
     
    Brake caliper
     

  8.  
  9. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm) in a criss-cross pattern, after aligning the wheel hub with the reference mark and holes as shown in appropriate illustration.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.
