Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the wheel, marking the location of the wheel to the hub prior to removal. Mark the individual location of all retainers as they are removed.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Brake caliper and support the bake caliper. Do not disconnect the bake hose. See Disc Brakes.
    Brake caliper bracket
    Brake rotor. See Disc Brakes.
    Tie rod from the knuckle
    Stabilizer shaft link at the lower control arm

    Halfshaft from the wheel bearing/hub. See Wheel Hub/Bearing Assembly.
    Park brake cable and the park brake cable bracket aside
    Wheel bearing and the backing plate
    Use a utility stand in order to support the lower control arm
    Height sensor link from the lower control arm as necessary. See Lower Control Arm.
    Shock absorber from the lower control arm. See Shocks/Struts.
    Upper control arm from the knuckle. See Upper Control Arm.

  9. Using the J 41820 separator, disconnect the lower ball joint from the knuckle.
  11. Remove the knuckle from vehicle.
  13. Detach the wheel speed sensor connector bracket from the knuckle.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Wheel speed sensor connector bracket to the knuckle; tighten the bolt and nut to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
    Knuckle to the vehicle
    Lower ball joint to the knuckle; tighten the ball joint nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) plus 130 degrees
    Upper control arm to the knuckle. Tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    Shock absorber to the lower control arm. Tighten to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm) without IRS or to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm) with IRS.
    Height sensor link to the lower control arm as necessary. See Lower Control Arm.
    Backing plate and the wheel bearing; tighten bolts to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm) with IRS or to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm) on new bolts for models without IRS
    Halfshaft to the wheel bearing/hub; tighten halfshaft nut to 192 ft. lbs. (260 Nm)
    Stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm; tighten nuts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
    Tie rod to the knuckle; with IRS, tighten tie rod nut to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm) and bolt to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm); with twist axle, tighten tie rod bolt to body to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm) and tie rod bolt to axle to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm)
    Brake rotor. See Disc Brakes
    Brake caliper bracket
    Brake caliper. See Disc Brakes

  3. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm) in a criss-cross pattern, after aligning the wheel hub with the reference mark and holes as shown in appropriate illustration.
