Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Support the rear axle.
    NOTE
    On independent rear suspension vehicles, use a utility stand to slightly raise the rear suspension at the shock absorber to compress the coil spring and relieve some spring tension prior to shock absorber removal.

  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    If the vehicle is equipped with automatic level control, disconnect the air tube connector from the shock absorber
     
    Remove the shock absorber upper bolt and nut
     
    Remove the shock absorber lower bolt and nut
     
    Remove the shock absorber

To install:

  1. Install the shock absorber.
  2.  
  3. Install the shock absorber bolts and nuts and tighten the shock absorber bolts and nuts to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
  4.  
  5. If the vehicle is equipped with automatic level control, install the air tube connector to the shock absorber.
  6.  
  7. Remove the support from the rear axle.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  

All-Wheel Drive
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Use a utility stand in order to slightly compress the coil spring and relieve tension on the shock absorber.
  4.  
  5. If the vehicle is equipped with automatic level control, disconnect the air tube connector from the shock absorber.

    Fig. Remove the shock absorber upper bolt (1 and 2), the shock absorber lower nut (3) and the shock absorber.

  7. Remove the shock absorber upper bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shock absorber lower nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shock absorber.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the shock absorber.
  2.  
  3. Install the shock absorber upper bolt, and tighten the shock absorber bolt to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the shock absorber lower nut, and tighten the shock absorber nut to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
  6.  
  7. If the vehicle is equipped with automatic level control, install the air tube connector to the shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. Remove the utility stand.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  

Front Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Set the parking brake and chock the wheels.
  4.  
  5. Support the rear axle.
  6.  
  7. If the vehicle is equipped with automatic level control, disconnect the air tube connector from the shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Shock absorber at the lower bracket
     
    Shock absorber at the upper bracket
     
    Shock absorber from the brackets by compressing it slightly
     
    Remaining hardware from the shock absorber
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Inspect the shock absorber, upper and lower mounting brackets and the frame mounting hole for cracks excessive wear and burrs.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Flat washer and insulator on the lower stem of the shock absorber
     
    Lower stem of the shock into the lower mounting bracket
     
    Flat washer and insulator on the upper stem of the shock absorber
     
    Upper stem of the shock in to the upper mounting bracket
     
    Lower shock absorber insulator, flat washer and nut. Torque the nut to 62 ft. lbs. (84 Nm).
     
    Upper shock absorber insulator, flat washer and nut. Torque the nut to 62 ft. lbs. (84 Nm).
     

  4.  
  5. If the vehicle is equipped with automatic level control, install the air tube connector to the shock absorber.
  6.  
  7. Remove the support from the rear axle.
  8.  
  9. Road test the vehicle.
