Upper Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper and support the bake caliper. Do not disconnect the bake hose.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the park brake cable from the park brake actuator and the park brake cable bracket.
  8.  
  9. Use a utility stand in order to support the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the height sensor link from the lower control arm as necessary.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the shock absorber from the lower control arm.

  15. Remove the upper control arm to knuckle nut and bolt.
  16.  
  17. Use 2 utility stands in order to support the crossmember.
  18.  
  19. Remove the crossmember to underbody bolts.
  20.  
  21. Slowly lower the crossmember until there is enough clearance to remove the upper control arm.

  25. Remove the upper control arm.

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm.
    NOTE
    Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the bolts and the nuts which secure the upper control arm to the crossmember, and tighten the nuts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Use 2 utility stands in order to raise the crossmember.
  6.  
  7. Install the crossmember-to-underbody bolts, and tighten the bolts to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the upper control arm to the knuckle, and tighten the nut which secures the upper control arm to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the shock absorber to the lower control arm.
  12.  
  13. Connect the height sensor link to the lower control arm as necessary.
  14.  
  15. Connect the park brake cable to the park brake actuator and the park brake cable bracket.
  16.  
  17. Install the brake caliper..
  18.  
  19. Install the rear wheel.
  20.  
  21. Raise and support the vehicle.
  22.  

All Wheel Drive
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper and support the brake caliper. Do not disconnect the brake hose.
  6.  
  7. Use a utility stand in order to support the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the height sensor link from the lower control arm as necessary.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the speed sensor harness connector.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the speed sensor harness from the control arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the speed sensor connector mounting bracket.
  16.  
  17. Remove the stabilizer shaft link from the lower control arm.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the shock absorber from the lower control arm.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the lower control arm-to-knuckle nut.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the ball joint from the knuckle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the lower ball joint nut.
  26.  
  27. Use the utility stand in order to lower the lower control arm and relieve the coil spring tension.
  28.  
  29. Remove the utility stand.
  30.  
  31. Carefully remove the coil spring.
  32.  

To install:

  1. Install the coil spring.
  2.  
  3. Install the spring jounce bumper to the spring.
  4.  
  5. Index and install the spring insulator to the spring.
  6.  
  7. Index and install the spring assembly to the control arms.
  8.  
  9. Use the utility stand in order to raise the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Install the lower ball joint to the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Install the lower ball joint nut. Tighten the lower ball joint nut to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
  14.  
  15. Install the stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm.
  16.  
  17. Install the speed sensor connector mounting bracket.
  18.  
  19. Connect the speed sensor harness to the control arm.
  20.  
  21. Connect the speed sensor harnesses.
  22.  
  23. Connect the shock absorber to the lower control arm.
  24.  
  25. Connect the height sensor link to the lower control arm as necessary.
  26.  
  27. Install the brake caliper.
  28.  
  29. Install the rear wheel.
  30.  
  31. Inspect and adjust the rear camber and toe angles as necessary.
  32.  
  33. Lower the vehicle.
  34.  

Front Wheel Drive Models
With Rear Axle

CAUTION
When removing the rear springs, do not use a twin-post type hoist. The swing arch tendency of the rear axle assembly when certain fasteners are removed may cause it to slip from the hoist which may cause personal injury.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake hose bracket screw from the control arm.
  4.  
  5. Use the utility stand in order to support the center of the rear axle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shock absorber lower bolts and nuts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear axle tie rod from the rear axle.
    NOTE
    Do not suspend the rear axle by the brake hoses. Damage to the brake hoses may result.

  10.  
  11. Use the utility stand in order to lower the rear axle.
    NOTE
    Care should be taken to avoid chipping or scratching the spring coating when handling the rear suspension coil spring. Damage to the coating can cause premature failure.

  13. Remove the springs and the insulators.
  14.  

To install:

NOTE
Position the spring so that the paint stripe is facing rearward and centered to the shock absorber.

  1. Install the springs and the insulators to the rear axle.
  2.  
  3. Use the utility stand in order to raise the rear axle.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear axle tie rod to the rear axle.
  6.  
  7. Install the shock absorbers to the rear axle.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake hose bracket to the control arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the utility stand.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  

Without Rear Axle
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake calipers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the parking brake cable mounting bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake caliper mounting bracket.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the ABS electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ABS electrical connector mounting bracket.
  14.  
  15. Use the utility jack in order to support the lower control arm.
  16.  
  17. Remove the stabilizer link from the lower control arm.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the ball joint from the knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Use the utility jack in order to lower the lower control arm and relieve the coil spring tension.
  22.  
  23. Remove the coil spring.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the coil spring.
  2.  
  3. Use the utility jack in order to raise the lower control arm and load the suspension.
  4.  
  5. Connect the ball joint to the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Install the stabilizer link to the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Use the utility jack in order to support the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Install the ABS electrical connector mounting bracket.
  12.  
  13. Connect the ABS electrical connector.
  14.  
  15. Install the brake caliper mounting bracket.
  16.  
  17. Install the parking brake cable mounting bracket.
  18.  
  19. Install the brake calipers.
  20.  
  21. Install the wheel and tire assemblies.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.
