3.1L Engine-Type I

Pontiac Grand Prix 1997-2000

There are several air cleaner types used on these vehicles with this engine. The procedure is similar and the air filter element is easily serviced on all vehicles.

  1. Disconnect the retainer clips (or remove the screws, depending on the vehicle) in the air cleaner cover and separate the cover from the air cleaner housing.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air filter element.

To install:

  1. Clean the air cleaner housing to remove dirt and debris. Inspect the filter element for excessive dirt and dust. Replace if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Position the filter element in the housing using care to see that it is properly seated.
  4.  
  5. Place the cover into position on the housing and secure with the latching clips.
  6.  

3.1L Engine-Type II & 3.8L Engine

Fig. As you can never know what to expect, this low-mileage 3.8L Grand Prix had an opening in the flexible air intake hose, apparently chewed through by mice. This large hole was on the clean side of the air filter which means unfiltered air was getting into the engine

  1. Locate and disconnect the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor electrical plug.
  2.  
  3. Locate and disconnect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor electrical plug.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the air intake duct/MAF sensor hose clamps and remove the duct/MAF sensor assembly.
  6.  
  7. Carefully remove the air inlet hose from the throttle body and air cleaner cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the two housing cover retaining clamps.
  10.  
  11. Remove the air cleaner cover and remove the air filter element.
  12.  
  13. Inspect the housing cover, seal assembly and air ducting for damage. If a problem is found, replace as necessary.

To install:

  1. Clean the air cleaner housing to remove dirt and debris. Inspect the filter element for excessive dirt and dust. Replace if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Carefully install the air filter element into the air cleaner assembly.
  4.  
  5. Reinstall the housing cover and housing cover retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the air inlet hose to the throttle body and air cleaner cover. Tighten the clamp.
  8.  
  9. Install the air intake duct/MAF sensor assembly and tighten the hose clamps
  10.  
  11. Carefully plug in the MAF and IAT sensor electrical connectors.
  12.  

3.4L (VIN E & X) & 3.5L (VIN H) Engines

  1. Locate and remove the four retaining screws and the housing cover from the air cleaner assembly.
  2.  
  3. Carefully remove the air filter element.
  4.

To install:

  1. Clean the air cleaner housing to remove dirt and debris. Inspect the filter element for excessive dirt and dust. Replace if necessary.

  3. Install the replacement air filter element into the air cleaner assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the housing cover and the four retaining screws on the air cleaner assembly.
