GM W-body vehicles use a unitized body with a separate sub-frame supporting the engine and transaxle. The inner fender panels and the radiator support are also integral parts of the body. Anti-corrosion materials have been applied to the interior surfaces of some metal panels. When servicing these panels, disturbed areas should be properly re-coated with a service type anti-corrosion material.

The front fenders on W-Body vehicles basically bolt to the body. There are numerous bolts and screws that must be removed, some hidden by trim pieces. There will be some minor variations to these procedures, depending on model, vehicle year and trim level, but fender removal is reasonably straightforward.

NOTE
Fender and door edges should be covered with masking tape for protection against chipping.

  1. Remove the hood using the procedures found in this section.
  2.
  3. Remove the hood strut from the fender by unsnapping from the upper ball stud. Use a small, flat-bladed tool to lift up on the clip. Do not remove the clip from the strut. Do the same on the lower clip.
  4.
  5. If the fender is being removed for replacement, the hood hinge will need to be removed and transferred to the replacement fender. Note that the hood hinge is bolted and spot welded in one place to the front fender. To remove the hood hinge, use the following procedure.
    1. Remove the bolts from the hinge.
    2.
    3. Use a center punch to accurately mark the center of the spot weld.
    4.
    5. Drill out the spot weld using a 3 / 8 inch drill bit.
    6.
    7. Remove the hood hinge from the fender.
    8.

  6.
  7. Remove the bolts from the upper part of the fender.
  8.
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  10.
  11. Remove the fender liner.
  12.
  13. Remove the rocker panel finish molding from the fender. Use the following procedure:
    1. Remove the sill plate at the lower door opening.
    2.

  14.

NOTE
Use care when handling this piece of plastic molding. Note that it may not be necessary to remove the entire molding just for front fender removal. Start at the front of the molding, and remove the screws that go through the fender flange into the front of the molding and from the bottom of the molding up into the fender flange. This may be enough to release the fender. If more of the molding must be loosened, or if accident damage requires removal of the rocker panel finish molding, continue with this procedure.

  1. Remove the molding's screws from the front fender and rear quarter panel
  2.
  3. Loosen the retainers from the bottom of the rocker panel finish molding. Use care these are primarily plastic clips. Do not break off the integral molding clips when removing the molding from the body. Gently unsnap the clips and remove the tabs. Some push/pin retainers may also be used to hold the molding to the body.
  4.

  1. Locate and remove the fascia nuts from the fender.
  2.
  3. Remove the remaining bolts from the lower and rear part of the fender.
  4.
  5. Remove the fender from the vehicle
  6.

To install:

  1. Install the fender to the vehicle and install the upper fender bolts and the screws at the rear of the fender.
  2.
  3. Install the nuts retaining the front of the fender to the front fascia panel.
  4.
  5. Install the rocker panel finish molding to the fender. Push the rear of the molding forward to ensure a flush fit with the quarter panel flange at the rear wheel opening. Align the rocker panel molding tabs and snap into the door slots. Push the front of the molding rearward to ensure a flush fit with the front fender flange at the front wheel opening. Install all hardware removed earlier. Install the sill plate at the bottom of the door opening.
  6.
  7. Install the front fender inner liner, install the tire and wheel assembly and lower the vehicle
  8.
  9. Install the hood hinge to the fender, and tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
