Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  

The transaxle and torque converter must be removed as an assembly; otherwise the torque converter driveplate, pump bushing or oil seal may be damaged. The driveplate will not support a load; therefore, none of the weight of the transaxle should be allowed to rest on the plate during removal.

  1. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner/throttle body assembly by removing or disconnect the following:
    1. Proportional Purge Solenoid (PSS)
    2.  
    3. Crankcase vent hose
    4.  
    5. Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and Idle Air Control (IAC) connectors
    6.  
    7. Throttle body air duct from the intake manifold
    8.  
    9. Accelerator cable
    10.  
    11. Transaxle kick down cable
    12.  
    13. Cruise control cable, if equipped
    14.  
    15. Air cleaner assembly
    16.

  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery tray from the bracket
     
    Torque converter clutch solenoid connector
     
    Neutral safely/back-up light switch connector
     
    Transaxle oil cooler lines and plug the lines to prevent contamination
     
    Shift cable and bracket from the transaxle
     
    Kick down cable and bracket from the transaxle
     
    Transaxle oil pan
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Structural collar
     
    Left engine-to-transaxle lateral bending brace
     
    Bell housing duct cover
     
    Starter
     
    Torque converter-to-driveplate bolts
     

  8.  
  9. Using a jack and a block of wood, support the engine/transaxle assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the transaxle upper mount through-bolt.
    NOTE
    The upper mount through-bolt may be accessed through the left side wheel house.

  12.  
  13. Lower the engine/transaxle assembly for clearance.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle-to-engine bolts, using an assistant to support the transaxle
     
    Transaxle
     
    Torque converter from the front pump

To install:

  1. If installing a new or replacement transaxle, transfer the upper mount to the new transaxle; then, torque the upper mount-to-transaxle bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install transaxle and tighten the transaxle-to-engine bolts, using an assistant to support the transaxle. Torque the transaxle-to-engine bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Raise the engine/transaxle assembly until the upper mount aligns with the mount bracket hole. Torque the upper mount-to-mount bracket through-bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Remove the jack and wooden block.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Torque converter-to-driveplate bolts and torque the bolts to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm)
     
    Starter and torque the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Starter electrical connectors and torque the positive cable bolt to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Bell housing dust cover
     
    Left engine-to-transaxle bending brace and torque the bolts to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm)

  11. Install the structural collar and torque the bolts as follows:
    1. Step 1-Structural collar-to-oil pan bolts: 30 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2-Structural collar-to-transaxle bolts: 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Step 3-Structural collar-to-oil pan bolts: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).

  13. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshafts
     
    Speed control cable, if equipped
     
    Right engine-to-transaxle lateral bending brace and torque the bolts to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm)
     
    Transaxle oil cooler lines and torque the oil cooler line-to-radiator fitting to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm) and transaxle oil cooler line fitting to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
     
    Torque converter clutch solenoid and neutral safely/back-up light switch connectors
     
    Transaxle dipstick tube
     
    Gearshift cable bracket bolt to the transaxle
     
    Gearshift cable end to the transaxle shift lever
     
    Transaxle kick down cable to the lever and bracket
     
    Battery tray
     
    Battery
     
    Accelerator cable
     
    Transaxle kick down cable
     
    Cruise control cable, if equipped
     
    Air cleaner assembly and torque the nuts and bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm)
     
    TPS and IAC connectors
     
    Crankcase vent hose to the throttle body
     
    PSS to the throttle body

  15. Fill the transaxle and check for leaks.
  16.  
  17. Be sure the vehicle-s back-up lights and speedometer are working properly.
  18.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery and battery tray
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the air cleaner/throttle body assembly by removing or disconnect the following:
    1. Proportional Purge Solenoid (PSS)
    2.  
    3. Crankcase vent hose
    4.  
    5. Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and Idle Air Control (IAC) connectors
    6.  
    7. Throttle body air duct from the intake manifold
    8.  
    9. Accelerator cable
    10.  
    11. Transaxle kick down cable
    12.  
    13. Cruise control cable, if equipped
    14.  
    15. Air cleaner assembly
    16.

  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle oil cooler lines. Use a cutter to cut the hoses off flush with the end of the fittings. You will need to install a service splice kit during installation.
     
    Input and output speed connectors
     
    Solenoid/pressure switch assembly connector
     
    Gearshift cable from manual valve
     
    Gearshift cable from upper mount bracket and position aside
     
    Upper starter mounting bolt
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Structural collar
     
    Left engine-to-transaxle lateral bending brace
     
    Starter
     
    Power steering cooler-to-crossmember fasteners and position the cooler aside
     
    Right lateral bending brace-to-transaxle bolt
     
    Torque converter dust shield
     
    Torque converter-to-driveplate bolts
     
    Both lower transaxle bell housing-to-engine bolts

  11. Using a jack and a block of wood, support the engine/transaxle assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the transaxle upper mount through-bolt.
    NOTE
    The upper mount through-bolt may be accessed through the left side wheel house.

  15. Lower the engine/transaxle assembly for clearance.
  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle-to-engine bolts, using an assistant to support the transaxle
     
    Transaxle
     

  18.  

To install:

  1. Install transaxle and tighten the transaxle-to-engine bolts, using an assistant to support the transaxle. Torque the transaxle-to-engine bolts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Raise the engine/transaxle assembly until the upper mount aligns with the mount bracket hole. Torque the upper mount-to-mount bracket through-bolt to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Remove the jack and wooden block.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Torque converter-to-driveplate bolts and torque the bolts to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm)
     
    Converter dust shield
     
    Starter and starter electrical connections
     
    Left lateral bending brace. Torque the brace-to-transaxle bolts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm), the brace-to-engine bedplate bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) and the brace-to-intake manifold bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
     
    Structural collar
     
    Power steering oil cooler
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Gearshift cable to mount.
     
    Solenoid/pressure switch assembly connector
     
    Input and output speed connectors
     
    Cooler lines with service splice kit
     
    Air cleaner and throttle body assembly
     
    Battery tray and battery
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the transaxle and check for leaks.
  10.  
  11. Be sure the vehicle-s back-up lights and speedometer are working properly.
