Neutral Safety Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The switch unit is bolted to the transmission case, behind the transmission shift lever. The switch prevents the engine from being started in any transmission position except P or N . It also controls the back-up lights.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the manual control linkage from the manual shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the switch attaching bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the switch from the transmission.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the switch on the transmission and hand-tighten the attaching bolts.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the switch and tighten the bolts securely.
  4.  
  5. Connect the manual control linkage to the manual shaft.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the manual control linkage as necessary.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.

  1. Place the transmission selector lever in N .
  2.  
  3. Loosen the attaching bolts.
  4.  
  5. With an aligning pin (2.0mm diameter) installed in the switch, move the switch until the pin falls into the hole in the rotor.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the attaching bolts securely.
  8.  
  9. Ensure that the engine will start only in P or N .
  10.  
  11. Ensure that the back-up lights go on only in R .
  12.
