ADJUSTMENT

Altima

Make sure the rear brakes are properly adjusted prior to adjusting the parking brake.

  1. Pull the parking brake lever with 44 lbs. (196 N) of force and note the number of notches moved.
  2.
  3. The parking brake lever should raise 7-8 notches.
  4.
  5. Locate the parking brake adjuster at the base of the lever and rotate the adjuster nut on the threaded rod to obtain the proper parking brake lever adjustment.
  6.
  7. Bend the parking brake warning lamp switch plate so that the brake warning light comes on when the parking brake lever is pulled up one notch. The brake light should turn off when the lever is fully released.
  8.

240SX
  1. Raise the parking brake lever 4 to 5 notches.
  2.
  3. Insert an offset box end wrench or ratchet and socket assembly into the opening in the control lever, and loosen the self-lock adjusting nut. Remove the wrench and push the lever completely down.
  4.
  5. Depress the brake pedal about five times. This will automatically set the rear caliper in the proper position.
  6.

Use 44 lbs. (196 N) of force to raise the lever for adjustment purposes.

  1. Adjust the parking brake cable until the proper stroke is achieved. The proper stroke is 6 to 8 notches for 1993-94 vehicles or 7 to 9 notches for 1995-98 vehicles. When the parking brake lever is pulled the specific number of notches, the rear wheels should not turn. When the parking brake lever is released, the rear wheels should turn freely.
  2.
  3. Bend the parking brake warning lamp switch plate so that the brake warning light comes on when the parking brake lever is pulled up one notch. The brake light should be extinguished when the lever is pushed completely down.
  4.
  5. After the proper stroke is achieved, tighten the adjusting nut.
