REMOVAL & INSTALLATION




CAUTION
The models covered by this guide may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Chassis Electrical .

Altima
  1. Disable the air bag system by disconnecting the negative battery cable and waiting at least 10 minutes, prior to starting this procedure.
  2.  

The air bag module mounting bolts are coated with a special bonding agent. Replace with new bolts whenever they are removed.

  1. Remove the air bag left and right retaining bolts and remove the air bag assembly.
  2.  


CAUTION
Always carry an air bag assembly with the bag and trim cover away from your body. Store the assembly facing upward; never place the assembly face down on any surface.

  1. Remove the steering wheel hold-down nut.
  2.  
  3. Verify that the wheels are in the straight-ahead position. Make a matchmark on the steering shaft and a matching one on the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel with the proper pulling tool.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the steering wheel, being careful to align the matchmarks.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering wheel hold-down nut.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the hold-down nut to 25-29 ft. lbs. (33-39 Nm).
  6.  
  7. With the front wheels raised off the floor, verify that the steering wheel turns freely and an equal number of turns to the left and to the right from center.
  8.  
  9. Install the air bag and tighten the mounting bolts to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Enable the air bag system.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

240SX
  1. Disable the air bag system by disconnecting the negative battery cable and waiting at least 10 minutes, prior to starting this procedure.
  2.  
  3. Remove the access cover on the side of the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove and discard the special bolt from the side of the steering column.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel pad/air bag module assembly from the steering wheel.
  8.  


CAUTION
Always carry an air bag assembly with the bag and trim cover away from your body. Store the assembly facing upward; never place the assembly face down on any surface.

  1. Matchmark the steering wheel to the steering column shaft.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel hold-down nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel with a suitable puller tool.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the steering wheel and align the matchmark located on the steering column shaft.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering wheel hold-down nut.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the nut to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the steering wheel pad/air bag module.
  8.  
  9. Install a new steering wheel pad/air bag module assembly securing bolt and tighten the bolt to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the access cover to the side of the steering column.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable and enable the air bag system.
  14.
