Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor

Print

Location

The intake air temperature sensor is mounted to the intake air duct.

Operation

The intake air temperature sensor detects intake air temperature and transmits a signal to the ECM. The temperature sensing unit uses a thermistor, which is sensitive to the change in temperature. Electrical resistance of the thermistor decreases in response to the temperature rise. This sensor is not directly used to control the engine system. It is used on for the on-board diagnostics.

Testing

The resistance of the intake air temperature sensor should be:

If the intake air temperature is 68 degrees F, than the resistance should be 2.1-2.9 kohms.

If the intake air temperature is 176 degrees F, than the resistance should be 0.27-0.38 kohms.

CAUTION
Do not use the ECM terminals when measuring the voltage as you may damage the ECM. Use a ground other than the ECM terminals, such as the body ground.
