Timing Chain & Sprockets

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine assembly
     
    Drive belt auto tensioner
     
    Idler pulley
     
    Thermostat housing and water hose
     
    Power steering pump bracket
     
    Oil pan (upper and lower)
     
    Oil strainer
     
    Ignition coil
     
    Rocker cover
     
    Timing chain case cover, loosening bolts in reverse order shown in figure
     

  4.  
  5. Obtain compression TDC of No. 1 cylinder as follows:
    1. Turn crankshaft pulley to align the TDC identification notch with timing indicator on front cover.
    2.  
    3. Ensure intake and exhaust cam lobes of No. 1 cylinder point outside.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Crankshaft pulley from crankshaft using a suitable puller
     
    Front cover, loosening bolts in reverse order shown in figure
     
    Front oil seal
     
    Oil pump drive spacer
     
    Oil pump
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the timing chain tensioner as follows:
    1. Squeeze the return-proof clip ends using suitable tool and push the plunger into the tensioner body.
    2.  
    3. Secure the plunger using stopper pin.
      NOTE
      Stopper pin is made from hard wire approximately 0.04 in (1mm) in diameter.

    5. Remove the bolts and chain tensioner.
    6.

  11. Remove the following:

    Chain tension guide and slack guide
     
    Timing chain
     

  12.  
  13. Using a wrench to hold the hexagon part of the camshaft, loosen the camshaft sprocket bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the camshaft sprockets.

To install:

  1. Ensure that the crankshaft key and dowel pin of each camshaft are facing the same direction.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft sprockets and tighten to 112 ft. lbs. (152 Nm).
     
    Timing chain
     
    Chain tension guide and slack guide
     
    Oil pump
     
    Oil pump drive spacer
     
    Front oil seal, using suitable tool
     
    Front cover, using new O-rings and tighten bolts in order shown in figure
     
    Chain case cover, and tighten bolts in order shown in figure
     
    Crankshaft pulley and tighten bolt to 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm) plus 90 degrees
     
    Ignition coil
     
    Oil strainer
     
    Lower and upper oil pan
     
    Power steering pump bracket
     
    Thermostat housing and water hose
     
    Idler pulley
     
    Drive belt auto tensioner
     
    Engine assembly
