Steering Knuckle

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper from its mounting and position it to the side.
    NOTE
    Do not disconnect the hydraulic lines. It is not necessary to remove the bolts on the torque member and brake hose except for disassembly or replacement of the caliper. In this case hang the caliper to the side with mechanics wire so that the brake hose is not under tension. Avoid depressing the brake pedal with the caliper removed.

  9. Put alignment marks on the rotor and wheel hub and bearing assembly. Remove the rotor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ABS sensor from the steering knuckle. Do not pull on the ABS sensor harness.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cotter pin. Remove the locknut from the halfshaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering outer shaft socket cotter pin at the steering knuckle. Loosen the mounting nut.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the steering outer socket from the steering knuckle.
    NOTE
    To prevent damage to the threads and to prevent the tool from coming off suddenly, temporarily loosely install the mounting nut.

  19. Remove the halfshaft.
  20.  
  21. Remove the wheel hub and bearing assembly bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the splash guard and wheel hub and bearing assembly from the steering knuckle.
  24.  
  25. Support the lower control arm assembly, using a suitable jack.
  26.  
  27. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the upper ball joint.
  28.  
  29. Separate the upper link ball joint from the steering knuckle using tool J-24319-01 or equivalent.
  30.  
  31. Remove the pinch bolt from the steering knuckle. Remove the steering knuckle from the lower control arm ball joint.
  32.  
  33. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle.
  34.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to use the alignment marks made during the removal procedure when reinstalling removed components.
  4.  
  5. Check and adjust the front end alignment, as required.
