Removal & Installation



It is recommended the engine and transaxle be removed as a single unit. If need be, the units may be separated after removal.


NOTE
The engine and transaxle assembly must be removed from the underside of the vehicle.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Release the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Drain the automatic transaxle, if equipped.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Hood
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Air cleaner, the air intake tube, the air flow meter and the throttle linkage
     
    Drive belts
     
    Engine ground cable
     
    Electrical connector from the crank angle sensor
     
    Engine electrical harness connectors
     
    Fuel feed and fuel return hoses
     
    Upper and lower radiator hoses
     
    Heater inlet and outlet hoses
     
    Engine vacuum hoses
     
    Power steering pump, A/C compressor and alternator
     
    Carbon canister
     
    Auxiliary fan, washer tank and the radiator (with the fan assembly)
     
    Clutch release cylinder from the clutch housing, if equipped with a manual transaxle
     
    Shift control rod and the shift support rod, on some models with a manual transaxle
     
    Control cable from the transaxle, on models with an automatic transaxle

  13. Install engine slingers to the block and connect a suitable lifting device to the slingers. Do not tension the lifting device at this point.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Exhaust pipe at both the manifold connections
     
    Front exhaust pipe from the vehicle and support the engine and transaxle assembly with proper jack
     
    Right and left side halfshafts from their side flanges
     
    Bolt holding the radius link support

  17. Lower the shifter and selector rods and remove the bolts from the motor mount brackets. Remove the nuts holding the front and rear motor mounts to the frame.
  18.  
  19. On some models it will be necessary to remove the center crossmember assembly from the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Lower the engine/transaxle assembly onto an engine stand.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Raise the engine/transaxle assembly into the vehicle. When raising the engine onto the mounts, be sure to keep it as level as possible.
  2.  
  3. After installing the motor mounts, adjust and install the buffer rods; the front should be 3.50-5.58 in. (89-91mm) and the rear should be 3.90-3.98 in. (99-101mm).
  4.  
  5. Check the clearance between the frame and clutch housing and be sure the engine mount bolts are seated in the groove of the mounting bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the transaxle and engine jack assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Center crossmember, if removed. Torque the bolts to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm)
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Radius link support
     
    Front exhaust pipe and remove the engine slingers and supports
     
    Control cable, if equipped
     
    Shift control and support rods, if equipped
     
    Clutch release cylinder, if equipped
     
    Radiator, auxiliary fan and washer tank
     
    Carbon canister
     
    Power steering pump, A/C compressor and alternator
     
    All engine vacuum hoses
     
    Heater and radiator hoses
     
    Fuel feed and return lines
     
    Engine electrical connectors and ground cables
     
    Drive belts
     
    Air cleaner, air intake tube and air flow meter
     
    Throttle linkage
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Hood
     

  10.  
  11. Fill the transmission fluid.
  12.  
  13. Fill the cooling system.
  14.  
  15. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  16.  
  17. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  18.

  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Hood
     
    Engine under cover
     
    All vacuum hoses, fuel lines, wires and connectors; tag before disconnecting

  13. If necessary, remove the wiper motor and linkage as follows:

    Operate wiper motor one full cycle, then turn off
     
    Remove the wiper arm nut covers, then the nuts
     
    Remove the wiper arms
     
    Remove fender covers
     
    Remove cowl top clips, then partially lift cowl top for access
     
    Disconnect windshield washer tube
     
    Remove cowl top seal and weatherstrip seal
     
    Remove cowl top cover
     
    Disconnect wiper motor connector
     
    Remove bracket and wiper motor assembly

  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front exhaust pipe from the manifold
     
    Ball joints from the steering knuckle
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Radiator and fans
     
    Drive belts
     
    Alternator
     
    A/C compressor. Position it aside with the lines attached. Do NOT disconnect the refrigerant lines.
     
    Power steering pump and position aside with the lines attached. Do NOT disconnect the fluid lines.

  17. Place a suitable jack under the transaxle. Install engine slingers and a suitable engine hoist. Raise the engine for access to the left side engine mount.

    Left side engine mount
     
    Control and support rods from the transaxle, manual transaxle only
     
    Control cable from the transaxle, automatic transaxle only
     
    Right side engine mount
     
    Center member, then carefully and slowly lower the transmission jack

  19. Lower the engine/transaxle assembly onto an engine stand.
    NOTE
    When lowering the engine out, guide it carefully to avoid hitting any other components.

  20.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the following points:
    1. If equipped with electronically controlled engine mounts, install them to the specifications shown in the accompanying figure.

    3. Make sure to connect all vacuum hoses, lines, and electrical connectors as tagged during removal.
    4.  
    5. Fill the cooling system.
    6.  
    7. Fill the engine with clean oil.
    8.  
    9. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.

  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Hood
     
    Strut tower bar
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Wiper arms and cowl top
     
    All vacuum hoses, fuel lines, wires and connectors; tag before disconnecting
     
    Front wheels
     
    Air cleaner case and duct
     
    Cooling fan, reservoir and hoses
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Battery ground at cylinder head
     
    Battery positive cable harness
     
    A/C lines from compressor
     
    2 body ground cables
     
    Fuel feed and EVAP hoses
     
    Power steering pump and lines and wire to engine

  15. From inside the passenger side of the vehicle remove the following:

    Kick panel
     
    Dash side finish panel
     
    Lower instrument panel cover
     
    ECM and TCM harness connectors
     

  16.  
  17. Pull the connectors out of the passenger side into the engine compartment and secure them to the engine.
  18.  
  19. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    When lowering the engine out, guide it carefully to avoid hitting any other components. bolts and nuts.



    Front exhaust pipe from the manifold
     
    Steering column lower shaft
     
    Propeller shaft
     
    Shift lever and clutch slave cylinder on man. trans. models
     
    Automatic transmission control rod
     
    Upper rear oil pan plate
     
    Front stabilizer bar
     
    Steering outer socket from steering knuckle
     
    Front transverse link
     
    Place a suitable jack under the front suspension member and transmission
     
    Rear engine crossmember bolts
     
    Front suspension member bolts and nuts, then carefully and slowly lower the jack

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the following points:
    1. Tighten the engine mounts, brackets and mounting members to the specified torque as shown in the illustration. When tightening the engine brackets, tighten the upper bolts first.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the rear engine mounting brackets in the sequence shown.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the suspension member bolts to 80-93 ft. lbs. (108-127 Nm) on 2003-2005 models or 65 ft. lbs. (87.5 Nm) on 2006 models.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the strut tower bar bolts 23-25 ft. lbs. (30-34 Nm) on 2003-2005 models or 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) on 2006 models.
    8.  
    9. Make sure to connect all vacuum hoses, lines, and electrical connectors as tagged during removal.
    10.  
    11. Fill the cooling system.
    12.  
    13. Fill the engine with clean oil.
    14.  
    15. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
