Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle or transmission
     
    Driveplate/flywheel
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil seal retainer
     

  6.  
  7. Tap the oil seal out of the retainer with a hammer and drift.
  8.  
  9. Clean all mating surfaces of any residual liquid gasket.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New seal into the retainer
     
    Oil seal retainer
     
    Oil pan
     
    Driveplate/flywheel
     
    Transaxle/transmission
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.  

1.6L & 2.0L Engines

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle
     
    Driveplate/ flywheel
     
    Oil seal retainer
     

  4.  
  5. Carefully pry the seal from the retainer. Be sure not to scratch the sealing surface of the crankshaft or oil seal bore.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Apply clean engine oil to the new seal. Position the seal on the rear of the engine in the proper direction.
  2.  
  3. Using a suitable seal driver, tap the seal into position in the seal retainer.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Flywheel/flexplate
     
    Transaxle assembly

1.8L & 2.0L Engines

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle
     
    Driveplate/ flywheel
     
    Oil seal retainer
     

  4.  
  5. Carefully pry the seal from the retainer. Be sure not to scratch the sealing surface of the crankshaft or oil seal bore.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Apply clean engine oil to the new seal. Position the seal on the rear of the engine in the proper direction.
  2.  
  3. Using a suitable seal driver, tap the seal into position in the seal retainer.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Flywheel/flexplate
     
    Transaxle assembly

3.0L & 3.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle
     
    Driveplate/flywheel
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil seal retainer
     

  6.  
  7. Tap the oil seal out of the retainer with a hammer and drift.
  8.  
  9. Clean all mating surfaces of any residual liquid gasket.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New seal into the retainer
     
    Oil seal retainer
     
    Oil pan
     
    Driveplate/flywheel
     
    Transaxle
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.  

3.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle or transmission
     
    Driveplate/flywheel
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil seal retainer
     

  6.  
  7. Tap the oil seal out of the retainer with a hammer and drift.
  8.  
  9. Clean all mating surfaces of any residual liquid gasket.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New seal into the retainer
     
    Oil seal retainer
     
    Oil pan
     
    Driveplate/flywheel
     
    Transaxle/transmission
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.
