Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the fluid from the transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Strut tower bar
     
    Front under vehicle cross bar
     
    Catalytic converter and front exhaust pipe
     
    Drive shaft
     
    Shift lever assembly from the control rod
     
    Shifter console and boot
     
    Shift lever from shift housing
     
    Clutch slave cylinder
     
    Crankshaft position sensor
     
    Back-up light and neutral safety switch
     
    Wire harnesses from transmission
     
    Starter
     
    Transmission cover plate
     

  6.  
  7. Place a transmission jack under the transmission.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear engine crossmember.
  10.  
  11. Remove the transmission mounting bolts and the transmission.
  12.

NOTE
The transaxle mounting bolts are different lengths and require special torque specifications. Use care when installing and tightening these bolts.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure noting the following:
    1. Tighten the rear engine crossmember bolts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
    2.

  3. Fill the transaxle with clean fluid.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the fluid from the transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery cables
     
    Battery and the battery tray
     
    Air cleaner and Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
     
    Clutch operating cylinder and hose clamps
     
    Speedometer pinion and Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connectors
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor (POS) from the transaxle
     
    Starter
     
    Shift control rod and support rod bracket
     
    Front wheels
     
    Halfshafts and properly support the engine
     
    Center member
     
    Left-hand mounting bracket from the transaxle and body
     
    Transaxle

NOTE
The transaxle mounting bolts are different lengths and require special torque specifications. Use care when installing and tightening these bolts.

  1. Install the transaxle assembly into the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the transaxle mounting bolts in the proper location as noted during removal.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Left hand mounting bracket
     
    Center member
     
    Halfshafts and front wheels
     
    Shift control rod and support rod bracket
     
    Starter
     
    CKP sensor
     
    Speedometer pinion and PNP switch connectors
     
    Clutch operating cylinder and hose clamp
     
    Air cleaner and MAF sensor
     
    Battery and tray
     
    Battery cables
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the transaxle with clean fluid.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the fluid from the transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Do not place the jack under the oil pan drain plug.



    Battery cables
     
    Battery and the battery tray
     
    Air cleaner and Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
     
    Air breather hose
     
    Control cable and cable mounting bracket
     
    Clutch operating cylinder and hose clamps
     
    Speedometer pinion, Park/Neutral Position (PNP) and ground harness switch connectors
     
    Starter
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor (POS) from the transaxle
     
    Shift control rod and support rod bracket
     
    Front wheels
     
    Halfshafts and properly support the engine with a jack under the oil pan
     



    Center member
     
    Left-hand mounting bracket from the transaxle and body
     
    Transaxle

NOTE
The transaxle mounting bolts are different lengths and require special torque specifications. Use care when installing and tightening these bolts.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle assembly into the vehicle
     
    Transaxle mounting bolts in the proper location as noted during removal
     
    Left hand mounting bracket
     
    Center member
     
    Halfshafts and front wheels
     
    Shift control rod and support rod bracket
     
    Starter
     
    CKP sensor
     
    Speedometer pinion, PNP switch and ground harness switch connectors
     
    Clutch operating cylinder and hose clamp
     
    Control cable and cable mounting bracket
     
    Air breather hose
     
    Air cleaner and MAF sensor
     
    Battery and tray
     
    Battery cables
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the transaxle with clean fluid.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.
