Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Crankshaft Position sensor (CKP) from the transmission
     
    Shift lever and control housing
     
    Clutch operating cylinder
     
    Speed sensor, OD position switch and Back-up lamp switch
     
    Neutral position switch
     
    Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO 2 S)
     
    Starter
     
    Gussets
     
    Exhaust tube mounting bracket and properly support the transmission
     
    Rear mount
     
    Transmission from the engine
     
    Transmission
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Lightly lubricate the clutch disc splines and main drive gear splines. Also lubricate the control lever sliding surfaces with grease.
  2.  
  3. Properly support the transmission and install the transmission to the rear of the engine.
  4.  
  5. Use the following torque specifications to bolt the transmission to the engine:
    1. Bolts No. 1 and 2: 29-36 ft. lbs. (39-49 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Bolts No. 3, 4 and 5: 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm).

  7. Install or connect the following:

    Rear mount and remove the transmission support
     
    Exhaust tube bracket
     
    Gussets
     
    Starter
     
    Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO 2 S)
     
    Neutral position switch
     
    Speed sensor, OD position switch and Back-up lamp switch
     
    Clutch operating cylinder
     
    Shift lever and control housing
     
    CKP sensor
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the transmission with clean oil to the proper level.
  10.  
  11. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the fluid from the transmission.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Strut tower bar
     
    Front under vehicle cross bar
     
    Catalytic converter and front exhaust pipe
     
    Drive shaft
     
    Shift lever assembly from the control rod
     
    Shifter console and boot
     
    Shift lever from shift housing
     
    Clutch slave cylinder
     
    Crankshaft position sensor
     
    Back-up light and neutral safety switch
     
    Wire harnesses from transmission
     
    Starter
     
    Transmission cover plate
     

  6.  
  7. Place a transmission jack under the transmission.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear engine crossmember.
  10.  
  11. Remove the transmission mounting bolts and the transmission.
  12.

NOTE
The transmission mounting bolts are different lengths and require special torque specifications. Use care when installing and tightening these bolts.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure noting the following:
    1. Tighten the rear engine crossmember bolts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
    2.

  3. Fill the transmission with clean fluid.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
