  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect both battery cables and wait at least 10 minutes after the battery cables are disconnected. This will disarm the air bag system so the steering wheel can be removed.
  4.  
  5. Point the front tires straight ahead and lock the steering in this position.
    WARNING
    Do not turn the steering wheel or column with the lower joint removed from the steering column or the spiral cable may be damaged.

  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel.
    NOTE
    The steering wheel must be removed before disconnecting the steering column lower joint to avoid damaging the SRS spiral cable.

  8.  
  9. Raise and support the vehicle safely and remove the front wheels.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tie rod ends from the steering knuckles
     
    Front exhaust tube and properly support the engine
     
    Bolts attaching the engine mounts to the engine mounting center member
     
    Engine mounting center member
     
    Front stabilizer bar from the vehicle
     
    Nuts attaching the hole cover to the bulkhead

  13. Move the hole cover aside and disconnect the lower joint from the rack and pinion. Matchmark the pinion shaft and the pinion housing to record the steering neutral position.

To install:

  1. Position the rack and pinion in the vehicle and install the mounting brackets. Torque the mounting nuts and bolts in the proper sequence to 54-72 ft. lbs. (73-97 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    New O-rings to the power steering fluid pipes and connect them to the rack and pinion. Torque the low pressure line 20-29 ft. lbs. (27-39 Nm) and the high pressure line to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm)
     

  4.  
  5. Align the lower steering joint to the pinion shaft and install the joint onto the pinion shaft. Torque the bolt to 17-22 ft. lbs. (24-29 Nm).

    Hole cover and torque the nuts to 36-43 inch lbs. (4-5 Nm)
     
    Front stabilizer
     
    Engine mounting center member and torque the bolts to 57-72 ft. lbs. (77-98 Nm)
     
    Engine mounts to the center member. Torque the bolts to 57-72 ft. lbs. (77-98 Nm). Remove the support from the engine
     
    Remaining components in the reverse order of removal
     

  6.  
  7. Torque the tie rod end nuts to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm), then install a new cotter pin.
  8.  
  9. Fill the power steering reservoir with fluid and bleed the air from the power steering system.
  10.  
  11. Check the vehicle front end alignment and adjust as necessary.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

    The steering wheel must be removed before disconnecting the steering column lower joint to avoid damaging the SRS spiral cable.

  9. Raise and support the vehicle safely and remove the front wheels.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front exhaust tube and properly support the engine
     
    Bolts attaching the engine mounts to the engine mounting center member
     
    Engine mounting center member
     
    Front stabilizer bar from the vehicle
     
    Nuts attaching the hole cover to the bulkhead

  13. Move the hole cover aside and disconnect the lower joint from the rack and pinion. Matchmark the pinion shaft and the pinion housing to record the steering neutral position.

To install:

  1. Position the rack and pinion in the vehicle and install the mounting brackets. Torque the mounting nuts and bolts in the proper sequence to 54-72 ft. lbs. (73-97 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    New O-rings to the power steering fluid pipes and connect them to the rack and pinion. Torque the low pressure line 20-29 ft. lbs. (27-39 Nm) and the high pressure line to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm)
     

  4.  
  5. Align the lower steering joint to the pinion shaft and install the joint onto the pinion shaft. Torque the bolt to 17-22 ft. lbs. (24-29 Nm).

    Hole cover and torque the nuts to 36-43 inch lbs. (4-5 Nm)
     
    Front stabilizer
     
    Engine mounting center member and torque the bolts to 57-72 ft. lbs. (77-98 Nm)
     
    Engine mounts to the center member. Torque the bolts to 57-72 ft. lbs. (77-98 Nm). Remove the support from the engine
     
    Remaining components in the reverse order of removal
     

  6.  
  7. Torque the tie rod end nuts to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm), then install a new cotter pin.
  8.  
  9. Fill the power steering reservoir with fluid and bleed the air from the power steering system.
  10.  
  11. Check the vehicle front end alignment and adjust as necessary.
  12.

  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine undercover
     
    Front crossbar
     
    Cotter pin at steering outer socket, then loosen mounting nut
     
    Separate outer socket from steering knuckle
     
    Power steering fluid pipes from the rack and pinion
     

  6.  
  7. Loosen upper yoke bolt and remove lower yoke bolt, then slide lower joint onto lower shaft.
  8.  
  9. Separate the steering gear from the lower shaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the fixing bolt and remove the steering gear, rack mounting bracket and insulator from the vehicle.

  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure noting the following:
    1. Tighten the rack mounting bracket bolt to 46-56 ft. lbs. (62-76 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Tighten the steering gear bolt to 89-103 ft. lbs. (120-140 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Tighten the outer socket nut to 22-28 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Orientate the steering column yoke to the steering gear to the specifications shown.
    8.  
    9. Tighten the steering column lower joint bolts to gear bolt to 18-21 ft. lbs. (24-34 Nm).
