Adjustment



If the wheel hub bearing assembly is removed, it must be replaced.


NOTE
The wheel hub bearing assembly is not repairable; it must be replaced when defective.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Torque the wheel bearing locknut to 138-188 ft. lbs. (187-255 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Verify that the wheel bearings operate smoothly.
  6.  
  7. Install a new cotter pin into the spindle to hold the wheel bearing locknut.
  8.  
  9. Install a dial indicator to the rear wheel hub bearing assembly and check the axial end-play; it should be less than 0.0020 in. (0.05mm).
  10.  
  11. Install the grease cap.
  12.  
  13. If the axial end-play exceeds specifications, the wheel bearing must be replaced.
  14.  

If the wheel hub bearing assembly is removed, it must be replaced.


NOTE
The wheel hub bearing assembly is not repairable; it must be replaced when defective.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Torque the wheel bearing locknut to 138-188 ft. lbs. (187-255 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Verify that the wheel bearings operate smoothly.
  6.  
  7. Install a new cotter pin into the spindle to hold the wheel bearing locknut.
  8.  
  9. Install a dial indicator to the rear wheel hub bearing assembly and check the axial end-play; it should be less than 0.0020 in. (0.05mm).
  10.  
  11. Install the grease cap.
  12.  
  13. If the axial end-play exceeds specifications, the wheel bearing must be replaced.
  14.  

The rear wheel bearings on the 240SX are not adjustable. Replace the bearing assembly if a growling noise is emitted during operation or if the bearing drags or turns roughly.

If the wheel hub bearing assembly is removed, it must be replaced.

Removal & Installation



If the wheel hub bearing assembly is removed, it must be replaced.


NOTE
If the vehicle is equipped with Anti-Lock Brake (ABS), the sensor must be removed to protect the sensor and its wiring.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheel(s).
  4.  
  5. If equipped with disc brakes, remove or disconnect the following:

    Brake caliper and hang it by a piece of wire
     
    Brake caliper support
     
    Disc brake pads
     
    Brake rotor
     

  6.  
  7. If equipped with drum brakes, remove or disconnect the following:

    Brake drum
     
    Brake shoe assembly, if necessary
     
    Grease cap
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the cotter pin, wheel bearing locknut, washer and the wheel hub bearing assembly. A slide hammer may be needed to remove the hub bearing assembly.
  10.  


NOTE
The wheel hub bearing assembly is not repairable; it must be replaced when defective.

To install:


NOTE
If the vehicle is equipped with ABS, the sensor ring must be removed and installed on the new hub.

  1. Apply oil to the threaded portion of the spindle and both sides of the plain washer.
  2.  
  3. Install the wheel hub bearing assembly, the washer and the wheel bearing locknut. Torque the wheel bearing locknut to 138-188 ft. lbs. (187-255 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Verify that the wheel bearings operate smoothly.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    New cotter pin into the spindle to hold the wheel bearing locknut
     

  8.  
  9. Install a dial micrometer to the rear wheel hub bearing assembly and check the axial end-play. It should be less than 0.0020 in. (0.05mm).

    Grease cap
     
    ABS sensor and its wiring, if removed
     
    Brake assembly and the wheels
     

  10.  

If the wheel hub bearing assembly is removed, it must be replaced.


NOTE
