Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the fluid from the transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Both battery cables
     
    Battery and bracket from the vehicle
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from the transaxle
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Torque converter clutch solenoid valve electrical connector
     
    Inhibitor switch and Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connectors
     
    Throttle wire from the engine side
     
    Control cable
     
    Oil cooler hoses
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Intake manifold support bracket
     
    Starter
     
    Upper engine to transmission bolts and properly support the transmission
     
    Center member
     
    Front and rear gussets and engine rear plate
     
    Rear transmission to engine bracket
     
    Rear transmission mount
     
    Transmission assembly

To install:

When connecting the torque converter to the transaxle, be sure to measure the distance between the mounting lug of the converter and the front edge of the transaxle.

  1. The measured distance between the converter and the front of the transaxle should be:
    1. 0.831 in. (21.1mm) or more for GA16DE engine vehicles
    2.  
    3. 0.626 in. (15.9mm) or more for SR20DE engine vehicles

  3. Raise the transaxle and install to engine drive plate.
  4.  
  5. Install the transaxle mounting bolts in the proper location as noted during removal.
    1. On 1.6L engines torque the 2 bottom bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm) and all other bolts to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).
    2.  
    3. On 2.0L engines torque the 2 bottom bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm) and all other bolts to 51-59 ft. lbs. (70-79 Nm).

  7. Install or connect the following:

    Torque converter to the drive plate and torque the bolts to 33-43 ft. lbs. (44-59 Nm)
     
    Rear transmission mount
     
    Rear transmission bracket
     
    Front and rear gussets and the rear engine plate
     
    Center member
     
    Starter and torque the bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm)
     
    Intake manifold support bracket
     
    Both half shafts
     
    Control cable
     
    Throttle wire
     
    CKP sensor
     
    Torque converter clutch solenoid valve, VSS and inhibitor switch electrical connectors
     
    Air duct
     
    Battery and both cables

  9. Fill the transmission to the proper level.
  10.  
  11. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    When removing the torque converter, turn the crankshaft for access to the bolts. Place alignment marks on the converter and drive plate, so the converter can be installed in its original position.


    NOTE
    The transaxle mounting bolts are different lengths. Tagging the bolts upon removal will facilitate proper tightening during installation.



    Battery cables
     
    Battery and tray
     
    Air cleaner and resonator
     
    Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch
     
    Revolution sensor and Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connectors
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
     
    Left hand mounting bracket from the transaxle and body
     
    Control cable
     
    Both front wheels
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Oil cooler pipes
     
    Starter and properly support the engine
     
    Center member
     
    Rear cover plate
     
    Torque converter
     
    Transaxle assembly

To install:


NOTE
When installing the torque converter to the transaxle, measure the depth of the converter to ensure proper installation.

  1. Using a straight edge across the mounting flange, measure the depth of the converter. The measurement is to the bolt mounting flange of the converter.
  2.  
  3. The depth measurement of the converter should be 0.75 in. (19mm) or more.
    NOTE
    The transaxle mounting bolts are different lengths and require special torque specifications. Use care when installing and tightening these bolts.

  4.  
  5. Install the transaxle assembly into the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Refer to the diagram for the automatic transaxle mounting bolt torque specifications.

  9. Torque the bolts holding the converter to the flexplate to 33-43 ft. lbs. (44-59 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Rear cover plate
     
    Center member
     
    Starter and remove the engine support
     
    Oil cooler pipes
     
    Halfshafts and both front wheels
     
    Control cable
     
    Left hand mounting bracket
     
    CKP sensor
     
    Revolution and VSS sensor electrical connectors
     
    PNP switch
     
    Air cleaner and resonator
     
    Battery, tray and both cables
     

  12.  
  13. Fill the transaxle with the proper type and amount of fluid.
  14.  
  15. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  16.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the fluid from the transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Both battery cables
     
    Battery and bracket from the vehicle
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from the transaxle
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Torque converter clutch solenoid valve electrical connector
     
    Inhibitor switch and Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connectors
     
    Throttle wire from the engine side
     
    Control cable
     
    Oil cooler hoses
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Intake manifold support bracket
     
    Starter
     
    Upper engine to transmission bolts and properly support the transmission
     
    Center member
     
    Front and rear gussets and engine rear plate
     
    Rear transaxle to engine bracket
     
    Rear transaxle mount
     
    Transaxle assembly

To install:

  13. Fill the transmission to the proper level.
