Transaxle Side



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disassemble the joint as follows:
    1. Remove the boot bands.
    2.  
    3. Matchmark the slide joint housing and inner race before separating the assembly.
    4.  
    5. Matchmark the spider assembly and drive shaft.
    6.  
    7. Remove the snapring.
    8.  
    9. Remove the spider assembly.
    10.  
    11. Remove the boot.
    12.

NOTE
Cover the halfshaft serrations with tape, so as not to damage the boot.

To install:

  1. Assemble the joint as follows:
    1. Thoroughly clean all parts in solvent and dry with compressed air. Check parts for evidence of damage and replace as necessary.
    2.  
    3. Install the boot and new small boot band on the halfshaft.
    4.

  3. Install the spider assembly. Confirm that the matchmarks are aligned.
  4.  
  5. Install a new outer snapring.
  6.  
  7. Pack the CV joint with 5.5-5.8 ounces (155-165g) of grease.
    1. Install the slide joint housing.
    2.  

  8.  
  9. Set the boot so that it does not swell or deform when its length is 4-4.07 in. (101.5-103.5mm).
  10.  
  11. Lock the new boot bands securely.
  12.  

  1. Remove the boot bands.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the slide joint housing and inner race, prior to separating the joint assembly.
  4.  
  5. Pry off the snapring and remove the ball cage, inner race and balls as a unit.
  6.  
  7. Remove the snapring and withdraw the boot.
  8.  


NOTE
Cover the halfshaft serrations with tape, so as not to damage the boot.

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean all parts in solvent and dry with compressed air. Check parts for evidence of damage and replace as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Boot and new boot band on the halfshaft
     
    New inner snapring
     
    Ball cage, inner race and balls as a unit. Ensure that the matchmarks are aligned.
     
    New outer snapring
     

  4.  
  5. Pack the halfshaft with 5.0-6.0 ounces (165-175 g) of grease.
  6.  
  7. Ensure that the boot is properly installed on the halfshaft groove.
  8.  
  9. Set the boot so that it does not swell or deform when its length is 3.82-3.90 in. (97-99mm).
  10.  
  11. Lock the new boot bands securely.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disassemble the joint as follows:
    1. Remove the boot bands.
    2.  
    3. Matchmark the slide joint housing and inner race before separating the assembly.
    4.  
    5. Matchmark the spider assembly and drive shaft.
    6.  
    7. Remove the snapring.
    8.  
    9. Remove the spider assembly.
    10.  
    11. Remove the boot.
      NOTE
      Cover the halfshaft serrations with tape, so as not to damage the boot.

To install:

  1. Assemble the joint as follows:
    1. Thoroughly clean all parts in solvent and dry with compressed air. Check parts for evidence of damage and replace as necessary.

    3. Install the boot and new small boot band on the halfshaft.

  5. Pry off the snapring and remove the ball cage, inner race and balls as a unit.
  6.  
  7. Remove the snapring and withdraw the boot.
    NOTE
    Cover the halfshaft serrations with tape, so as not to damage the boot.

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean all parts in solvent and dry with compressed air. Check parts for evidence of damage and replace as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Install the boot and new boot band on the halfshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install a new inner snapring.
  6.  
  7. Install the ball cage, inner race and balls as a unit. Ensure that the matchmarks are aligned.
  8.  
  9. Install a new outer snapring.
  10.  
  11. Pack the halfshaft with 5.0-6.0 ounces (165-175 g) of grease.
  12.  
  13. Ensure that the boot is properly installed on the halfshaft groove.
  14.  
  15. Set the boot so that it does not swell or deform when its length is 3.82-3.90 in. (97-99mm).
  16.  
  17. Lock the new boot bands securely.
  18.  

Wheel Side



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  

The joint on the wheel side cannot be disassembled.

  1. Prior to separating the joint assembly, matchmark the halfshaft and joint assembly.
  2.  
  3. Separate the joint using a slide hammer.
  4.  
  5. Remove the boot bands.
  6.  

To assemble:

  1. Thoroughly clean all parts in solvent and dry with compressed air. Check parts for evidence of damage and replace as necessary.
  2.  


NOTE
Cover the halfshaft serrations with tape, so as not to damage the boot.

  1. Install the boot and small boot band on the halfshaft.
  2.  
  3. Set the joint assembly onto the halfshaft and align the matchmarks.
  4.  
  5. Attach the joint assembly to the halfshaft by lightly tapping the serrated end with a plastic hammer.
  6.  


NOTE
Using a metal hammer may damage the threads on the end of the joint.

  1. Pack the CV joint with 4.6-4.41 ounces (115-125g) of grease.
  2.  
  3. Ensure that the boot is properly installed on the halfshaft groove.
  4.  
  5. Set the boot so that it does not swell or deform when its length is 3.78-3.86 in. (96-98mm).
  6.  
  7. Lock the new boot bands securely.
  8.  

The joint on the wheel side cannot be disassembled.

  1. Prior to separating the joint assembly, matchmark the halfshaft and joint assembly.
  2.  
  3. Separate the joint using a slide hammer.
  4.  
  5. Remove the boot bands.
  6.  

To assemble:

  1. Thoroughly clean all parts in solvent and dry with compressed air. Check parts for evidence of damage and replace as necessary.
  2.  


NOTE
Cover the halfshaft serrations with tape, so as not to damage the boot.

  1. Install the boot and small boot band on the halfshaft.
  2.  
  3. Set the joint assembly onto the halfshaft and align the matchmarks.
  4.  
  5. Attach the joint assembly to the halfshaft by lightly tapping the serrated end with a plastic hammer.
  6.  


NOTE
Using a metal hammer may damage the threads on the end of the joint.

  1. Pack the halfshaft with 3.5-4.0 ounces (100-115 g) of grease.
  2.  
  3. Ensure that the boot is properly installed on the halfshaft groove.
  4.  
  5. Set the boot so that it does not swell or deform when its length is 3.327-3.406 in. (84.5-86.5mm).
  6.  
  7. Lock the new boot bands securely.
  8.

  11. Ensure that the boot is properly installed on the halfshaft groove.

  13. Set the boot so that it does not swell or deform when its length is 3.78-3.86 in. (96-98mm).

  15. Lock the new boot bands securely.
  16.

  9. Pack the halfshaft with 3.5-4.0 ounces (100-115 g) of grease.

  11. Ensure that the boot is properly installed on the halfshaft groove.

  13. Set the boot so that it does not swell or deform when its length is 3.327-3.406 in. (84.5-86.5mm).
  14.  
  15. Lock the new boot bands securely.
