Alternator

Installation



  1. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator and torque the bolts to 11-15 ft. lbs. (16-20 Nm)
     
    Harness-to-A/C compressor, harness stay and the alternator electrical harness
     
    Throttle cable
     
    Drive belt. Properly tension the belt
     
    Upper radiator hose
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Top off the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.  

1.6L & 2.0L Engines
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator and retaining bolts loosely
     
    Belt and connect the wiring
     

  2.  
  3. Adjust the drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Torque the retaining bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

1.8L & 2.0L Engines
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator and retaining bolts loosely
     
    Belt and connect the wiring
     

  2.  
  3. Adjust the drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Torque the retaining bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

2.4L Engines
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator and torque the bolts to 11-15 ft. lbs. (16-20 Nm)
     
    Harness-to-A/C compressor, harness stay and the alternator electrical harness
     
    Throttle cable
     
    Drive belt. Properly tension the belt
     
    Upper radiator hose
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Top off the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  6.  

2.5L Engines
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator and torque the upper bolt to 18-23 ft. lbs. (26-31 Nm) and the lower bolt to 33-38 ft. lbs. (44-52 Nm)
     
    Drive belt. Properly tension the belt
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Engine cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

3.0L Engine

Install or connect the following:



Alternator and torque the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm)
 
Alternator harness connector
 
A/C compressor back into location
 
Radiator cooling fan and shroud
 
A/C compressor mounting bolts
 
Drive belt and tension the belt
 
Splash guard
 
Negative battery cable
 


NOTE
Proper belt tension is important. A belt that is too tight may cause alternator bearing failure; one that is too loose will cause a gradual battery discharge and/or belt slippage, resulting in belt breakage from overheating.

Install or connect the following:



Alternator and torque the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm)
 
Alternator harness connector
 
A/C compressor back into location
 
Radiator cooling fan and shroud
 
A/C compressor mounting bolts
 
Drive belt and tension the belt
 
Splash guard
 
Negative battery cable
 


NOTE
Proper belt tension is important. A belt that is too tight may cause alternator bearing failure; one that is too loose will cause a gradual battery discharge and/or belt slippage, resulting in belt breakage from overheating.

3.5L Engine

Install or connect the following:



Alternator
 
Upper and lower alternator bolts. On Altima and Maxima tighten the upper bolt to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16 -20 Nm) and the lower bolt to 32-38 ft. lbs. (44-52 Nm). On 350Z, tighten the upper bolt to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm) and the lower bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
 
Alternator and A/C compressor harness connectors
 
Drive belt
 
Radiator on Altima and Maxima
 
Radiator fan on 350Z
 
Right side engine undercover and side inspection cover
 
Negative battery cable
 

Removal



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system below the upper radiator hose level.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Upper radiator hose
     
    Alternator electrical harness, harness stay and the harness-to-A/C compressor
     
    Throttle cable
     
    Loosen the adjusting bolt
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Alternator mounting bolts
     
    Alternator from the engine

1.6L & 2.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    2 lead wires and connector from the alternator
     
    Drive belt adjusting bolt, loosen only
     
    Drive belt
     
    Alternator

3.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Splash guard on the right side of the vehicle
     
    Dive belt
     
    Four A/C mounting bolts
     
    Radiator fan and shroud
     
    A/C compressor forward
     
    Alternator harness connector
     
    Alternator mounting bolts and lower the alternator from the vehicle

Removal & Installation



1.6L, 1.8L & 2.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    2 lead wires and connector from the alternator
     
    Drive belt adjusting bolt, loosen only
     
    Drive belt
     
    Alternator
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator and retaining bolts loosely
     
    Belt and connect the wiring
     

  2.  
  3. Adjust the drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Torque the retaining bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

1.8L & 2.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    2 lead wires and connector from the alternator
     
    Drive belt adjusting bolt, loosen only
     
    Drive belt
     
    Alternator

2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system below the upper radiator hose level.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Upper radiator hose
     
    Alternator electrical harness, harness stay and the harness-to-A/C compressor
     
    Throttle cable
     
    Loosen the adjusting bolt
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Alternator mounting bolts
     
    Alternator from the engine
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator and torque the bolts to 11-15 ft. lbs. (16-20 Nm)
     
    Harness-to-A/C compressor, harness stay and the alternator electrical harness
     
    Throttle cable
     
    Drive belt. Properly tension the belt
     
    Upper radiator hose
     
    Negative battery cable

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine cover
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Alternator drive belt
     
    Alternator mounting bolts
     
    Alternator from the engine
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator and torque the upper bolt to 18-23 ft. lbs. (26-31 Nm) and the lower bolt to 33-38 ft. lbs. (44-52 Nm)
     
    Drive belt. Properly tension the belt
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Engine cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Splash guard on the right side of the vehicle
     
    Drive belt
     
    Four A/C mounting bolts
     
    Radiator fan and shroud
     
    A/C compressor forward
     
    Alternator harness connector
     
    Alternator mounting bolts and lower the alternator from the vehicle
     

  4.  

3.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Right side engine undercover and side inspection cover
     
    Radiator on Altima and Maxima
     
    Radiator fan on 350Z
     
    Drive belt
     
    Alternator and A/C compressor harness connectors
     
    Upper and lower alternator bolts
     
    Alternator
     

  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Right side engine undercover and side inspection cover
     
    Radiator
     
    Drive belt
     
    Alternator and A/C compressor harness connectors
     
    Upper and lower alternator bolts
     
    Alternator
     

  4.  

To install:

Install or connect the following:



Alternator
 
Upper and lower alternator bolts. Tighten the upper bolt to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16 -20 Nm) and the lower bolt to 32-38 ft. lbs. (44-52 Nm).
 
Alternator and A/C compressor harness connectors
 
Drive belt
 
Radiator
 
Right side engine undercover and side inspection cover
 
Negative battery cable
