Exhaust Manifold

Removal & Installation



1.6L And 2.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    Air cleaner or collector assembly
     
    Heat shields from the manifold and front exhaust pipe
     
    Front exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold
     
    Temperature sensors, Oxygen (O 2 ) sensors and air induction pipes from the manifold
     
    Manifold support brackets
     
    Exhaust manifold attaching nuts and the manifold from the block. Discard the exhaust manifold gaskets.
     

  4.  
  5. Clean the gasket surfaces and check the manifold for cracks and warpage.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the exhaust manifold with a new gasket.
  2.  
  3. On SR20DE engines, torque the fasteners from the center outward in several stages to 27-35 ft. lbs. (37-48 Nm).
  4.  
  5. On GA16DE engines, tighten the mounting nuts with washers in sequence to 19-21 ft. lbs. (26-29 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Temperature sensors, O 2 sensors and air induction pipes
     
    Manifold support brackets
     
    Exhaust pipe to the manifold using a new gasket. Torque the nuts to 21-25 ft. lbs. (28-33 Nm) for GA16DE engine models or 32-37 ft. lbs. (43-50 Nm) for SR20DE engine models
     
    Heat shields
     
    Air cleaner or collector assembly
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
  10.  

1.6L, 1.8L & 2.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    Air cleaner or collector assembly
     
    Heat shields from the manifold and front exhaust pipe
     
    Front exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold
     
    Temperature sensors, Oxygen (O 2 ) sensors and air induction pipes from the manifold
     
    Manifold support brackets
     
    Exhaust manifold attaching nuts and the manifold from the block. Discard the exhaust manifold gaskets.
     

  4.  
  5. Clean the gasket surfaces and check the manifold for cracks and warpage.

To install:

  1. Install the exhaust manifold with a new gasket.
  2.  
  3. On 1.6L and 1.8L engines, tighten the mounting nuts with washers in sequence to 19-21 ft. lbs. (26-29 Nm).
  4.  
  5. On 2.0L engines, torque the fasteners from the center outward in several stages to 27-35 ft. lbs. (37-48 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Temperature sensors, O 2 sensors and air induction pipes
     
    Manifold support brackets
     
    Exhaust pipe to the manifold using a new gasket. Torque the nuts to 21-25 ft. lbs. (28-33 Nm) for 1.6L and 1.8L engines, or 32-37 ft. lbs. (43-50 Nm) for 2.0L engine models.
     
    Heat shields
     
    Air cleaner or collector assembly
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
  10.  

1.8L And 2.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    Air cleaner or collector assembly
     
    Heat shields from the manifold and front exhaust pipe
     
    Front exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold
     
    Temperature sensors, Oxygen (O2) sensors and air induction pipes from the manifold
     
    Manifold support brackets
     
    Exhaust manifold attaching nuts and the manifold from the block. Discard the exhaust manifold gaskets.
     

  4.  
  5. Clean the gasket surfaces and check the manifold for cracks and warpage.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the exhaust manifold with a new gasket.
  2.  
  3. On 1.8L engines, tighten the mounting nuts with washers in sequence to 19-21 ft. lbs. (26-29 Nm).
  4.  
  5. On 2.0L engines, torque the fasteners from the center outward in several stages to 27-35 ft. lbs. (37-48 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Temperature sensors, O2 sensors and air induction pipes
     
    Manifold support brackets
     
    Exhaust pipe to the manifold using a new gasket. Torque the nuts to 21-25 ft. lbs. (28-33 Nm) for 1.8L engines, or 32-37 ft. lbs. (43-50 Nm) for 2.0L engine models.
     
    Heat shields
     
    Air cleaner or collector assembly
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
  10.  

2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold
     
    Oxygen (O 2 ) sensor electrical connector
     
    Exhaust manifold cover
     
    Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) tube from the exhaust manifold
     
    Exhaust manifold-to-engine bolts and nuts and discard the gaskets
     
    Retaining bolts and nuts in reverse of the tightening sequence
     
    Exhaust manifold from the vehicle
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean all gasket mounting surfaces and install new gaskets.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Exhaust manifold to the engine and torque the nuts to 27-35 ft. lbs. (37-48 Nm)

    EGR tube to the exhaust manifold and torque the nuts to 29-36 ft. lbs. (39-49 Nm)
     
    Exhaust manifold cover and torque the bolts to 45-57 inch lbs. (5-7 Nm)
     
    O 2 sensor electrical connector
     
    Exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold and torque the bolts to 33-44 ft. lbs. (45-60 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
  6.  

2.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Air/fuel ratio sensor connector
     
    Oxygen (O2) sensor electrical connector
     
    Air/fuel ratio sensor
     
    Oxygen (O2) sensor
     
    Upper and lower exhaust manifold covers
     
    Exhaust manifold/catalyst assembly in reverse of the tightening sequence

  1. Clean all gasket mounting surfaces and install new gaskets.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Exhaust manifold/catalyst and torque the nuts to 29-32 ft. lbs. (40-44 Nm)

NOTE
After tightening, go back and retighten nuts numbers 1 and 3 to the specification.



Air/fuel ratio sensor after coating the threads with anti-sieze
 
Oxygen (O2) sensor after coating the threads with anti-sieze
 
Oxygen (O2) sensor electrical connector
 
Air/fuel ratio sensor connector
 
Engine undercover
 
Negative battery cable
 

  1. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Air/fuel ratio sensor connector
     
    Oxygen (O 2 ) sensor electrical connector
     
    Air/fuel ratio sensor
     
    Oxygen (O 2 ) sensor
     
    Upper and lower exhaust manifold covers
     
    Exhaust manifold/catalyst assembly in reverse of the tightening sequence

To install:

  1. Clean all gasket mounting surfaces and install new gaskets.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    After tightening, go back and retighten nuts numbers 1 and 3 to the specification.



    Exhaust manifold/catalyst and torque the nuts to 29-32 ft. lbs. (40-44 Nm)
     



    Air/fuel ratio sensor after coating the threads with anti-seize
     
    Oxygen (O 2 ) sensor after coating the threads with anti-seize
     
    Oxygen (O 2 ) sensor electrical connector
     
    Air/fuel ratio sensor connector
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
  6.  

3.0L & 3.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Exhaust manifolds from the exhaust pipes
     
    Protective covers from the manifolds
     
    Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) from the manifold, if equipped
     
    Exhaust manifold-to-engine mounting nuts
     
    Manifolds from the engine and discard the gaskets
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean all gasket mounting surfaces. Install new gaskets.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Exhaust manifold and torque the nuts in steps to 22-24 ft. lbs. (30-32 Nm)
     
    Protective shields and torque the bolts in steps to 46-57 inch lbs. (5-7 Nm)
     
    Exhaust manifolds to the exhaust pipes and torque the nuts to 32-37 ft. lbs. (43-50 Nm)
     
    HO2S sensor to the manifold and torque the fastener to 30-44 ft. lbs. (40-60 Nm), if equipped
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
  6.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Exhaust manifolds from the exhaust pipes
     
    Protective covers from the manifolds
     
    Heated Oxygen (HO 2 S) sensor from the manifold, if equipped
     
    Exhaust manifold-to-engine mounting nuts
     
    Manifolds from the engine and discard the gaskets
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean all gasket mounting surfaces. Install new gaskets.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Exhaust manifold and torque the nuts in steps to 22-24 ft. lbs. (30-32 Nm)
     
    Protective shields and torque the bolts in steps to 46-57 inch lbs. (5-7 Nm)
     
    Exhaust manifolds to the exhaust pipes and torque the nuts to 32-37 ft. lbs. (43-50 Nm)
     
    HO 2 S sensor to the manifold and torque the fastener to 30-44 ft. lbs. (40-60 Nm), if equipped
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
  6.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Exhaust manifolds from the exhaust pipes
     
    Protective covers from the manifolds
     
    Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO 2 S) from the manifold, if equipped
     
    Exhaust manifold-to-engine mounting nuts
     
    Manifolds from the engine and discard the gaskets

To install:

  1. Clean all gasket mounting surfaces. Install new gaskets.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Exhaust manifold and torque the nuts in steps to 21-24 ft. lbs. (28-33 Nm)
