Removal & Installation



1.6L & 1.8L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    Front exhaust tube and properly support the transaxle assembly
     
    Center crossmember
     
    Support brackets from the sides of the oil pan
     
    Rear cover plate, models equipped with a automatic transaxle
     
    Oil pan mounting bolts
     

  6.  
  7. Using an oil pan seal cutter, separate the oil pan from the engine.
    WARNING
    Do not drive the seal cutter into the oil pump or rear oil seal retainer portion, for the aluminum mating surfaces will be damaged. Do not use a prybar to remove the oil pan; the flange will be deformed.

  8.  
  9. Clean all the sealing surfaces.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Apply sealant to the rear oil seal retainer.
  2.  
  3. Apply a 0.128-0.177 in. (3.5-4.5mm) continuous bead of liquid gasket to the oil pan mating surface.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan and torque bolts, in sequence, to 56-73 inch lbs. (6.3-8.3 Nm)

    Rear cover plate, models equipped with a automatic transaxle
     
    Oil pan support brackets
     
    Center crossmember
     
    Front exhaust tube
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    Oil pan plug, using a new gasket and tighten the plug to 21-28 ft. lbs. (7-8 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. After 30 minutes of gasket curing time, refill the oil pan with the specified quantity of clean oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  10.  

1.6L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    Front exhaust tube and properly support the transaxle assembly
     
    Center crossmember
     
    Support brackets from the sides of the oil pan
     
    Rear cover plate, models equipped with a automatic transaxle
     
    Oil pan mounting bolts
     

  6.  
  7. Using an oil pan seal cutter, separate the oil pan from the engine.
    WARNING
    Do not drive the seal cutter into the oil pump or rear oil seal retainer portion, for the aluminum mating surfaces will be damaged. Do not use a prybar to remove the oil pan; the flange will be deformed.

  9. Clean all the sealing surfaces.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Apply sealant to the rear oil seal retainer.
  2.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Center crossmember
     
    Support brackets from the sides of the oil pan
     
    Rear cover plate, models equipped with a automatic transaxle
     
    Oil pan mounting bolts
     

  6.  
  7. Using an oil pan seal cutter, separate the oil pan from the engine.
  8.  


WARNING
Do not drive the seal cutter into the oil pump or rear oil seal retainer portion, for the aluminum mating surfaces will be damaged. Do not use a prybar to remove the oil pan; the flange will be deformed.

  1. Clean all the sealing surfaces.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Apply sealant to the rear oil seal retainer.
  2.  
  3. Apply a 0.128-0.177 in. (3.5-4.5mm) continuous bead of liquid gasket to the oil pan mating surface.

  5. Install or connect the following:

2.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Lower steel oil pan bolts in the reverse of installation sequence
     
    Steel oil pan. Insert a cutting tool between steel oil pan and aluminum oil pan. Tap the tool around the perimeter of the pan to cut the gasket material.
     
    Oil baffle bolts and oil baffle
     
    Front exhaust tube and set a suitable jack under the transaxle and raise the engine
     
    Center crossmember from the vehicle
     
    Transaxle shift control cable, if equipped with an automatic transaxle
     
    Compressor gussets and the rear cover plate
     
    Aluminum oil pan bolts. Loosen aluminum oil pan bolts in reverse order of the tightening sequence.
     
    2 transaxle mounting bolts and refit the them into vacant holes at the bottom of the oil pan. Use a cutting tool to cut the gasket material.
     
    2 transaxle mounting bolts that were relocated and the pan from the vehicle
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Clean the oil pan rail of all liquid gasket and apply a new bead of532
  2.  
  3. Install the aluminum oil pan. Torque the bolts in the opposite order of removal as follows:
    1. Bolts No. 1-16: 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Bolts No. 17-18: 60-72 inch lbs. (6-8 Nm).
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    2 transaxle mounting bolts, rear cover plate and the compressor gussets
     
    Automatic transmission shift control cable, if equipped
     
    Center crossmember member, front exhaust tube and the baffle plate and torque the bolts to 56-66 inch lbs. (6.4-7.5 Nm)
     

  6.  
  7. Clean the steel oil pan rail of all liquid gasket and apply a new bead of532

    Steel oil pan and torque the bolts in the proper sequence to 56-66 inch lbs. (6.4-7.5 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. After 30 minutes, refill the engine with clean oil
  10.

    Front exhaust tube and set a suitable jack under the transaxle and raise the engine
     
    Center crossmember from the vehicle
     
    Transaxle shift control cable, if equipped with an automatic transaxle
     
    Compressor gussets and the rear cover plate
     
    Aluminum oil pan bolts. Loosen aluminum oil pan bolts in reverse order of the tightening sequence.
     
    2 transaxle mounting bolts and refit the them into vacant holes at the bottom of the oil pan. Use a cutting tool to cut the gasket material.

To install:

  1. Clean the oil pan rail of all liquid gasket and apply a new bead of 5 / 32 in. (4.5mm) thickness to the aluminum oil pan rail.
  2.  
  3. Install the aluminum oil pan. Torque the bolts in the opposite order of removal as follows:
    1. Bolts No. 1-16: 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Bolts No. 17-18: 60-72 inch lbs. (6-8 Nm).

  5. Install or connect the following:

    2 transaxle mounting bolts, rear cover plate and the compressor gussets
     
    Automatic transmission shift control cable (if equipped)
     
    Center crossmember member, front exhaust tube and the baffle plate and torque the bolts to 56-66 inch lbs. (6.4-7.5 Nm)
     

  6.  
  7. Clean the steel oil pan rail of all liquid gasket and apply a new bead of 5 / 32 in. (4.5mm) thickness to the steel oil pan rail.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Steel oil pan and torque the bolts in the proper sequence to 56-66 inch lbs. (6.4-7.5 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. After 30 minutes, refill the engine with clean oil
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Lower steel oil pan bolts in the reverse of installation sequence
     
    Steel oil pan. Insert a cutting tool between steel oil pan and aluminum oil pan. Tap the tool around the perimeter of the pan to cut the gasket material.
     
    Oil baffle bolts and oil baffle

2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Bolts securing the steel oil pan to the aluminum oil pan in reverse order of the tightening sequence
     

  6.  
  7. Install a seal cutter between the steel oil pan and the aluminum oil pan
  8.  
  9. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Take care not to damage the aluminum oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Steel oil pan
     
    Baffle plate and oil strainer
     
    Front exhaust tube
     
    Front suspension member
     
    A/C compressor gussets
     
    Rear cover plate
     
    Aluminum oil pan retaining bolts in reverse order of the tightening sequence
     

  12.  
  13. Insert a seal cutter between the oil pan and the cylinder block.
  14.  
  15. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Take care not to damage the aluminum oil pan.
  16.  
  17. Lower the oil pan from the cylinder block and remove it from the engine.
  18.

To install:

  1. Carefully scrape the old gasket material away from the pan and cylinder block mounting surfaces, then apply a continuous 3.5-4.5mm wide bead of liquid gasket around the oil pan. Install the pan within 5 minutes or else this step will have to be repeated.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Aluminum oil pan and torque the bolts, in sequence, to 13 ft. lbs. (17.5 Nm)
     
    Baffle plate
     
    Steel oil pan. Torque the bolts in sequence to 61 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
     
    Rear cover plate
     
    Front suspension member
     
    Front exhaust tube
     
    A/C compressor gussets
     
    Front suspension member
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Wait 30 minutes before refilling the crankcase with clean oil.
  6.  
  7. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle, checks for leaks and repair if necessary.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Bolts securing the steel oil pan to the aluminum oil pan in reverse order of the tightening sequence

  7. Install a seal cutter between the steel oil pan and the aluminum oil pan
  8.  
  9. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Take care not to damage the aluminum oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Steel oil pan
     
    Baffle plate and oil strainer
     
    Front exhaust tube
     
    Front suspension member
     
    A/C compressor gussets
     
    Rear cover plate
     
    Aluminum oil pan retaining bolts in reverse order of the tightening sequence
     

  12.  
  13. Insert a seal cutter between the oil pan and the cylinder block.
  14.  
  15. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Take care not to damage the aluminum oil pan.
  16.  
  17. Lower the oil pan from the cylinder block and remove it from the engine.
  18.  

To install:

  4.  
  5. Wait 30 minutes before refilling the crankcase with clean oil.
  6.  
  7. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle, checks for leaks and repair if necessary.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Bolts securing the steel oil pan to the aluminum oil pan in reverse order of the tightening sequence

  6.  
  7. Install a seal cutter between the steel oil pan and the aluminum oil pan
  8.  
  9. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Take care not to damage the aluminum oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Steel oil pan
     
    Baffle plate and oil strainer
     
    Front exhaust tube
     
    Front suspension member
     
    A/C compressor gussets
     
    Rear cover plate
     
    Aluminum oil pan retaining bolts in reverse order of the tightening sequence
     

  12.  
  13. Insert a seal cutter between the oil pan and the cylinder block.
  14.  
  15. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Take care not to damage the aluminum oil pan.
  16.  
  17. Lower the oil pan from the cylinder block and remove it from the engine.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Carefully scrape the old gasket material away from the pan and cylinder block mounting surfaces, then apply a continuous 3.5-4.5mm wide bead of liquid gasket around the oil pan. Install the pan within 5 minutes or else this step will have to be repeated.

  5. Wait 30 minutes before refilling the crankcase with clean oil.

  7. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle, checks for leaks and repair if necessary.
  10.  

2.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Power steering hose bracket from the collector
     

  6.  
  7. Support the engine from above and below with a suitable jack and hoist.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Power steering pump and reservoir and wire aside
     
    Auxiliary drive belts
     
    A/C compressor and wire aside
     
    Upper sway bar links
     
    Front and rear engine mount through bolts
     
    Lower ball joints
     
    2 steering gear housing mounting bolts
     
    Front suspension member bolts and front suspension member
     
    Remove the lower oil pan bolts in the sequence shown
     

  10.  
  11. Install a seal cutter between the steel oil pan and the aluminum oil pan
  12.  
  13. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Take care not to damage the aluminum oil pan.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Steel oil pan
     
    Oil pickup screen
     
    Rear plate cover and 4 engine-to-transmission bolts
     
    Remove the upper oil pan bolts in the sequence shown
     

  16.  
  17. Install a seal cutter between the block and the upper oil pan
  18.  
  19. Remove the upper oil pan.

To install:

  1. Carefully scrape the old gasket material away from the pan and cylinder block mounting surfaces, then apply a continuous 3.5-4.5mm wide bead of liquid gasket around the oil pan. Install the pan within 5 minutes or else this step will have to be repeated.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Upper oil pan and torque the bolts in sequence to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Rear plate cover and 4 engine-to-transmission bolts
     
    Oil pickup screen
     
    Lower oil pan bolts in sequence to 61 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
     

  4.  
  5. Install the front suspension member and tighten the bolts to the specifications shown in the illustration.

  7. Install or connect the following:

    2 steering gear housing mounting bolts
     
    Lower ball joints
     
    Front and rear engine mount through bolts
     
    Upper sway bar links
     
    A/C compressor
     
    Auxiliary drive belts
     
    Power steering pump and reservoir
     
    Power steering hose bracket to the collector
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Wait 30 minutes before refilling the crankcase with clean oil.
  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the vehicle, checks for leaks and repair if necessary.
  14.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     

  6.  
  7. Support the engine from above and below with a suitable jack and hoist.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front and rear engine mount through bolts
     
    Center crossmember
     
    A/C compressor and wire aside
     
    Remove the lower oil pan bolts in the sequence shown
     

  10.  
  11. Install a seal cutter between the steel oil pan and the aluminum oil pan
  12.  
  13. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Take care not to damage the aluminum oil pan.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Steel oil pan
     
    Oil pickup screen
     
    Rear plate cover and 4 engine-to-transmission bolts
     
    Remove the upper oil pan bolts in the sequence shown
     

  16.  
  17. Install a seal cutter between the block and the upper oil pan
  18.  
  19. Remove the upper oil pan.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Carefully scrape the old gasket material away from the pan and cylinder block mounting surfaces, then apply a continuous 3.5-4.5mm wide bead of liquid gasket around the oil pan. Install the pan within 5 minutes or else this step will have to be repeated.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Upper oil pan and torque the bolts in sequence to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Rear plate cover and 4 engine-to-transmission bolts
     
    Oil pickup screen
     
    Lower oil pan bolts in sequence to 61 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
     
    A/C compressor
     
    Center crossmember
     
    Front and rear engine mount through bolts
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Wait 30 minutes before refilling the crankcase with clean oil.
  6.  
  7. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle, checks for leaks and repair if necessary.
  10.  

3.0L & 3.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    Steel (lower) oil pan bolts in the reverse of the installation sequence
     

  6.  
  7. Insert a seal cutter between the steel and aluminum oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Be careful not to damage the aluminum mating surface of the upper oil pan.

  11. Hang the engine at the right and left side engine slingers with a suitable hoist.
  12.  
  13. Position a suitable jack under the transaxle.

    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensors (REFERENCE and POSITION) from the oil pan
     
    Front and rear engine mounting nuts and bolts
     
    Center crossmember assembly
     
    Engine drive belts
     
    A/C compressor and mounting bracket
     
    Rear cover plate and the lower transaxle bolts
     
    Aluminum (upper) oil pan bolts in the reverse of the installation sequence

  15. Insert a seal cutter between the aluminum oil pan and the engine block.
  16.  
  17. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces of the oil pan or engine block.
  18.  
  19. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oil pan assembly
     
    Bolts that secure the baffle plate and the baffle plate
     
    O-rings from the cylinder block and oil pump body

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Baffle plate to the oil pan and torque the bolts to 22-27 inch lbs. (2.5-3.1 Nm) and apply sealant to the front and rear seal of the oil pan
     
    New O-rings to the cylinder block and the oil pump body
     

  2.  
  3. Apply a 4.5-5.5mm wide continuous bead of liquid gasket to the upper oil pan mating surface and install the oil pan. Torque the bolts in sequence to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan strainer and torque the bolts to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm)
     
    Rear cover plate and lower transaxle bolts
     
    A/C compressor and bracket
     
    Drive belts
     
    Center crossmember
     
    Front and rear engine mount hardware
     
    CKP sensors
     
    Front exhaust tube and support
     
    Oil strainer
     
    Steel oil pan and torque the bolts, in sequence, to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm)
     
    Engine under covers
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. After waiting approximately 30 minutes, fill the engine with clean oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercovers
     
    Steel (lower) oil pan bolts in the reverse of the installation sequence
     

  6.  
  7. Insert a seal cutter between the steel and aluminum oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Be careful not to damage the aluminum mating surface of the upper oil pan.

  10.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
